Scheduling Jobs through a fast paced Sheet Metal Job Shop

I am gathering opinions... How do you schedule jobs through a fast paced sheet metal job shop, (mills, lasers, break press, welders, etc.)? When we receive a customer order it then goes to the shop floor with the drawings and estimated labor/machine hours to bill the customer and that all works out great. When it is done it gets shipped to the customer. We have no computer system for tracking the orders so when the customer calls checking on a late order, it is hard to not only find the order but guesstimate when it will be done, and we have alot of late orders. I am putting together several options to fix this problem, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.:thanx:

Do you have the ability to use a database. Order comes in, new record is added to database with customer, customer PO number, part number, quantity of parts, and operations where the part goes (or who is going to run the part) or some other way to 'find' the job' on the floor. The record could also have a start date, end date, and maybe ship date. This way when your customer calls, you can search for the record and see where it is at. You can also use this database to track customers and other things.

Another option (which will be a big step, and in my opinion well worth it) is to get software that tracks all this normally. Job Boss, E2 are some that I can think of off hand. This can be fairly expensive but will allow you to track better.

We have no data base. We keep track of job orders and related info in an excell spreadsheet. I am going to check out Jobb Boss, Thank you!!:thanx:

I have used E2 in the past, and it works well for a small/ medium sized shop (under 50 employees) I have heard good things about Job Boss as well.

We use E2 as well and it works good, We use to use Job Boss but switched because the owner did not like the fact that a specific part number did not have it's own management (I will explain better).

I don't know if this is still the case, but under Job Boss you create an order (Job number) for part number 123456, if you want to create a different order (new job number based on new PO for example) you had to find the first order number and 'copy' it. In E2, you create the part 123456 as an inventory item and then you create a job off this number (with the ability to change as needed).

I have 'heard' that E2 is more expensive (no direct knowledge of this), but if you are running the same parts it I believe it will save allot of time.

I can also testify that the E2 quality module leaves a lot to be desired. I think it was designed by bean-counters, and not anyone with a background in "quality".
