Hi Graeme.
Just curious.....will you suggest allowing some consideration for CCT?
Of course, if you really want to be a pain, give the candidate a Smith chart and have them plot Rho and Gamma of both source and load....then take them to a X band waveguide and have them tune and flatten it.

Hershal,
At the time I started this thread (June 2001) Chris G was just starting the work to put the Certified Calibration Technican program proposal through the ASQ process. Now that it is a reality (as you, I and a bunch of others who have worked on it since know too well!) then the question and the answer both change.
In the hypothetical scenario, a prospective calibration tech who is an ASQ Certified Calibration Technican (CCT) would bypass any in-house test and go straight to review of job history, references, interviews by existing techs and so on.
Today, if I wanted to develop an in-house test to cull the wannabee's I would now look in any of several current and upcoming study guides and other resources geared towards the CCT body of knowledge.
Stuff like the Smith Chart (tm) and its applications would definitely be asked if the tech was going to be working microwave equipment and components. (Besides, it's may main area of experience.) Of course, now that so much uses coax up to 65 GHz+ maybe a bigger challenge would be to hand them an X-band device and ask them what it is! (Or, go out to the shops and
find one!)
Geoff's suggstion is also an excellent one - and how long have they been a Cover. But Jstain might not want to interview me before I've had my second cup of coffee because its not until then that my pulse starts!
