Selecting Wires for Measuring P.D. of Thread Gages

I would like to start in-house calibration of thread plug gages. Currently we send them outside for calibration.
For this I am trying to decide where to buy thread wires from. Usually they are about $80 for any one specific size (size meaning "thread per inch"). But then I have also come across another website where SEVERAL sizes are available for only $24.00!

Here is the website:
http://www.fishermachine.com/index.php?content=buyproducts&cat=9

Can anyone please tell me if these wires are good for calibration purpose?
If not, can you suggest any other relatively economical source (we are a small company) to buy these wires from?

Thanks.

I have a set of those, and I would not use them for checking gages.

Thread Tech (no affliation) sells a nice set on Van Kruaff[sp] thread wires. IMO that is a prefered ones to get for doing calibration of thread plugs.

Note you'll also need a bench or "super" micrometer that allows for the adjustable pressure required to calibrate the thread gages.
The wires and nice mircometer will problay set you back in the 5k+(USD) range. A regualr micrometer is not really the correct tool for this task.

Like I said earlier, thread wires typically cost somewhere around $100 for any one specific TPI (threads per inch).

If we buy wires for, let's say, 20 TPI; would we be able to use these wires to measure thread plugs of various diameters?
In other words, can we measure both "1/4-20" and "1/2-20" thread plugs with these wires?

They look like a typical website that sells typical product at a small mark-up. We get what we pay for. I wish I could give a suggestion but there are many people here better versed in your problem.

Anyone?

It is interesting that you would mention Thread Check in the same post as Bench Micrometer. I have been looking at procuring and utilizing the holder for hand micrometers the Thread Check Website advertizes (see Attached). So my quandary is how acceptable is it to be procuring the better graded Thread Measuring Wires but use the holder set up to calibrate or verify threaded plug gauges? Any thoughts on the matter?

Thanks,
Doug

Just because the micrometer has a bunch of zero’s (high resolution) this does not guarantee its accuracy or precision. Performing a gage R&R on the instrument will help determine whether or not it is appropriate for the intended use.

Using a better grade of wire will help reduce error induced by the wires, thus noise (error) induced by the micrometer will be more apparent.

Think of it as the links in a chain. The strongest link is not the chain’s ultimate capacity. The weakest link is.

In the end, I would think what (if any) standards your company (or Customers) requires will determine what is truly “acceptable”.

Using XX pins could possibly work, but to be honest, it would be cheaper to go with the thread wires. Special order XX pins are expensive and they would need to be within 0.000010 of each other to follow the standard.

Also, the $24.00 set- I'd say no. PeeDee brand wires and the like have a huge tolerance and are not accurate.

I am not particularly thrilled with Thread Check brand thread wires (or Vermont gage since that's who I think they sell). I prefer Deltronic brand wires. I've also heard that Boston Centerless makes good wires, but I've never used them or bought them.
