Setup time only at starting production?

Hello all

At trying to implement lean practices, setup time as I understand is time
spent in preparing the machine, to adjust screws, to apply some pressure, some cleaning,
to fill up some liquids, etc.
Up to here is understood, setup times ¨= 10 minutes.
But in my case, after finishing productiion, on the machine some instruments have to be dismounted, loosening
some screws, to reset pressure values, to do some cleaning ,
and all of this is done in 15 minutes. this post activities are needed in the machine so that can be ready for the next
production.
In this case, time spent in the starting and at finishing is the total setup time = 25 minutes?
Note:post activities after production can not be part of the initial setup of the next work order, because
they have to be done immediatelly after finishing production.

Any idea about how to manage this issue in Lean?

Thanks

The 15 minutes spent at the end of a run, preparing for the next run, can be shown as part of your setup time. You are performing tasks which will allow you to run production. This time does need to be accounted for in some manner.

Allow me to share two points and then I will try to connect them:

1. The Manufacturing Lead time could be defined as a sum: Queue + Setup + Run time + Wait + Move.
2. Teardown: This term is used In some industries. This is the time you need to restore the conditions of your machine, process, after the "run time".

Considering these two points;

  • In your case, then, we have 10 minutes setup and 15 minutes teardown.
  • Or, 10 minutes setup and 15 minutes "move time".
Eventually, you may also want to explore if the "teardown" is an external activity of your next setup.

I hope this helps or motivates more conversation.

Teardown is not external, because it is to adjust some screws, to wash some elements in the machine
We tried to treat them as externals, but it not so easy to have a spare of them ready to be used,
(cost and due to type of mounting.

Thanks again.
