Severity of 9 or 10 should be identified as Special characteristic?

During external audits, TS audits had been telling us that everything that we identified with a severity of 9 or 10 should be identified as a critical characteristics.. auditors said that this is due to AIAG rules.. I don't recall anything like that in the AIAG FMEA handbook. The only thing I found on page 57 is that when the severity is 9 or 10, it is imperative that the team must ensure that hte risk is addressed through existing design controls or recommended actions. But it does not say that I should put a "CC", "C", or special symbol on the classification colum.. is there something that I'm missing? Am I right? are the auditors right?

The auditor is incorrect. There are no "AIAG Rules." It's ISO/TS 16949:2009 and the "Customer-Specific Requirements" that count.

"Fight" about the auditor's interpretation or seek another Certification Body.

AIAG does not have rules for this. TS states that you either have special characteristics identified by your customer or you have to determine special characteristics. TS does not state how / what.

AIAG PFMEA, 4th edition on page 39 and 91 mentions Classification and refers to customer specific requirements.

No where does it state that severity 9 and 10 are special characteristics in the FMEA manual.

Thank you so much to all of you.. that's what I thought but due to the auditors were insisting on that.. I was afraid I might be not seing the whole picture.. I'm fine now.. I feel more confortable now. Thank you & have a great weekend!!!

No document available - Ford STA requirement.

Best regards,
Antoine
The Supplier Technical Assistant can not require this unless this has been contractually agreed upon between the Supplier and Customer during contract review. The industry suffers already too much from "pulled-out-of-the-hat" requirements by anyone (auditors, some STA's, etc.) who think that this would be nice to have.
