Bev, I think that if you look back over Steven's contributions here you'll find that you and he are pretty much in sync on this subject. His observation was pretty clearly intended as irony. I think we all can agree that as far as statistical analysis is concerned, there isn't much that's new--there's just repackaging of tried-and-true methods for marketing purposes.
You are correct. I believe that there are some new tools in six sigma, but most of the concepts are a repackaging of old methods.

Irony - perhaps - but still a cheap shot - even if unintended. Nowhere in this thread is Six Sigma ever mentioned. The only connection to Six Sigma is that I have been a documented proponent of Six Sigma (when done right - which even I have fully recognized is infrequently) and my profile lists me as a master black belt. The discussion was about Shainin's "Paired Comparison" test. I offered an answer to the originator's question - and then the posting askign about my intentions regarding Six Sigma and statistics?? off topic and off base. and that'sthe last I'll say on that. Can we get back to the topic of this thread?

Re: Shainin DOE - Paired Comparison? Background of this theroy? Binomial distribution

Dear Bev,
I am undergoing training on DOE using shanin techniques . Although i know that the tools are based on non parametric test but on the same hand also don't know the name of those test ?
please help me identifying those particular tests so that i can understand them better statistically .
The tools used are : Paired comparison , variable search and component search

I'm assuming that you are not being trained by Shainin LLC? as they would have the answers to your questions.

The non parametric tests that Shainin employs are based on the Tukey-Duckworth tests. I have included a briefing on materials I utilize based directly from Tukey's work.

Hopefully in the next several days I can get back to your post and provide further elaboration.

However, I must state that Shainin LLC has service marked the terms you have listed although the fundamental statistics and methods upon which these are based pre-date Shainin's service marks and are commonly available in the literature but not using those specific names. A good source for Shainin specific materials is Keki Bhote's "World Class Quality" and I woudl refer you to that book. I make absolutely NO claim to promoting Shainin methods in any way, shape or form...

I would "depends" not use Shanin DOE in Product development; but would highly recommend using it in Problem Solving.
If i can recall I think the tool you are looking for called 6-pack.

Re: Shainin DOE - Paired Comparison? Background of this theory? Binomial distribution

".....Now my questions, where is the background of this theroy? binomial distribution? Does any experts can show me any clues?"

Thanks a lot!:applause:
Hyper geometric is the distribution used to establish the end counts used in the Shainin techniques.

3 good
3 bad
6 total

You could draw:
GGGBBB
BBBGGG
GGBBBG
GGBBGB

etc...

Since there are 20 different ways 6 parts could be drawn, and only 2 of them could be "just by chance" that all the good lined up in a row, we have 1/20 = 5%

There is a 5% chance that this line up will happen randomly. Therefore, it is a 95% likelihood that there is a meaningful difference.

The statistics and the techniques for this type of non parametric test were developed and published by John Tukey. search for Tukey-Duckworth test.
Shainin gave it a cuter name and popularized it.

actually it is a misunderstanding of hypothesis testing that there is a 1-alpha rate probability of a difference existing. While there is a alpha% probability of getting a 'difference' simply by chance it does not follow that there is a 1-alpha chance of 'being right'. IF there is really a difference AND your test structure was correct there is a 100% probability that the difference you see is true.
