Shanghai here we come...

If anyone of you can get a Chinese ops manager to say no, please let me know how you did it. I also need to figure out how to tell them that an 8D or an ICAR is not a personal affront to their manhood. It is certainly challenging and rewarding. However, I have never met a plant culture that is so receptive to making improvements and increasing the level of quality by doing whatever it takes to get the job done and then ask very politely - "Thank you sir, may I have another?"

It goes back to culture and a sense of ownership/responsibility. Pretty standard with Asian peoples and admirable

So I have not been on here in about 1,000 years, but I am back and ready to go at it again. But not for long....

I am being officially transferred to Shanghai. We have 4 JVs there and I am heading up the Quality at all of them. They are in Nantong, Ningbo, Yin Lun.

The strange part is that I actually convinced the better half to make the move with me as well. Her first response was "Are you freakin' kidding me, you are nuts" then after some discussion, some make up (ahem - insert your imagination here) and more research, everyone is on board. The better half is excited, the kids are overflowing with excitement and I am just glad they are glad.

Anyway...anyone ever been there? I mean longer than a visit? We have found a home already and found a school (I think) but there are so many questions and so little time. We all go over in December for a visit for 7 days then we are officially moving in June. Ay yi yi. It is right around the corner.

Anywhooooo...just looking for comments, tips, suggestions etc.

Thanks a million

Hi, Are everything done? do you still need help? LOL, I had been in Shanghai for a short time, but my friend is a permanence in Shanghai, see anything I can help you? : )

No. There is not anywhere near the range even close to necessary to make a trip like that. Not a stupid question at all.

It would have to be shipped.

On a funny note -- the better half is not at all worried about it getting over there. She is more concerned about being able to buy conditioner and tampons and kid's schools and house stuff. She is literally laughing right now because we are so guys and worry about the stupidest things (her words, not mine).:biglaugh: :biglaugh: :biglaugh:

Dont worry about these stuff!!! you can get everything you want in Shanghai!!! and there are many persons who can speak in English, of course if you can speak in Chinese, should be better!!!!

And for the school? how old is your kids? I think there are many different schools in Shanghai!!!

There is only one thing you should worry about!!! that is traffic!!! because Shanghai is a crowded city!!

The kids are going to attend either Shanghai International School or SCIS. SCIS is right at the compund where we will live within walking distance.

As for traffic, I am not worried. I will take train to work and any other travel will be accomplished with a car service and driver. Apparently our insurance will not cover us or any vehicles there in Shanghai if we are the driver.

I am not worried about getting too much of anything at this time. It appears that we will be able to get just about anything we need, although....

We have heard rumors that certain items are not easily obtainable...:nope:

We are so excited and pumped. The kids and my better half are learning 10 new words a day and I am....well let's just say that I am not. We received pictures of the house last night and OMG. They appear to do it right over there. Not that they dont do it right here, but OMG. After seeing that, the oldest said, "what happens if we dont want to come home?"

Well, Geek... What can I say, but: Good luck, and have a good time. :agree: And: Please keep us informed about how it goes. A running commentary, perhaps? It should be interesting.

Well fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on which side you are on) we do not go untill June. So lots of time.

Last time I was in Shanghai I could not access the Cove. Not sure if it was blocked, settings were not right or what -- but kept getting a error message that was not very specific. Company IT guy had never seen it before either. Tried from work, the hotel and even an internet cafe. I do see people from China on here, but I am not sure how they do it....

IEGEEK,
New to the website but as luck may have it this is one of the first posts I have found. My husband, my 7 year old daughter and myself will also (most likely) be moving to Shanghai. Looks to be around May/June 2010. We leave on March 19 for 1st visit and interview and after that things will be in high motion. Was wondering if you or your wife would be interested in helping me attain ANY info that you have, you know - the stuff nobody tells you - or the stuff you spend 10 days looking for online when someone before you has already 'been there, done that' and hopefully are nice enough to share and not make you go through the same drudgery. lol. Please let me know one way or the other if you are willing to help. Our time crunch is making my head spin. So much to do, so little time. HELP!!!!!!!
Thanks in advance.
Michelle

Oh, I also read a post regarding having a sense of humor vs. you know - the opposite - and find myself in that predicament quite often. Humor gets me through life.

Welcome to the Cove. :D

Unfortunately, IEGeek hasn't logged in here for over three years; in one of his posts in this thread he said that he hadn't been able to access the Cove from Shanghai. There should be others here who can offer some guidance, though, so stay tuned.

I was laughing whenever I saw this kind of concern, blocking internet. It is not really true in China. Government only block the websites with pornographic, violent and horrific to protect people here.

I m from China, I can visit this website whenever I want.
