Should I apply for a job if I'm not available to take the job immediately if offered?

Hi to all,
I have seen a very good job opening in a company and I'm tempted to apply, the issue is that I'm currently on maternity leave.
So I'm wondering if Do I need to put a note on my resume about this "status"?
, or wait until if I'm lucky and the company contact me and let them know that I'm on maternity leave.
Do you think that I could have a chance to get the job?

It is a very good opportunity and I wouldn't like to lose the opportunity to have at least an interview.

Please advise.

Thank you very much.

I recognized that there are regional and cultural differences for this kind of thing.

Based on my experience here, I will go ahead and apply. If they interview me, I'll let them know then. If we really like each other, I am sure some give and take arrangements are possible.

The real question is not WHY? you might be delayed in starting work, but simply WHEN? you can start.

Even in Mexico, I'm pretty sure there are no employment laws which say you must disclose your maternity status (or paternity status, either;)) when you apply for a job.

You also don't have to disclose (in the application) whether you are currently working full-time or on leave for ANY reason (illness, vacation, temporary furlough because work is slow, etc.)

So, the short answer is:
if you feel you will be available to work at the job if and when they hire you, omit anything about maternity in your resume, application, and cover letter in the same way you would omit how many children you have, whether your mother lives with you or the fact you have a distant relative who works as a lifeguard at a resort. The point being - none of those things affect how well you can do the job UNLESS you, yourself, let them affect how you do the job.

Just as a refresher, review the following threads BEFORE you make the application.

Something about Wes's response leaves a bit lacking in the morals department for me.

The thread starter didn't say if s/he has given birth yet or is expecting the child's birth in the future still.

Although employment acts and laws vary from state to state and country to country, Is it really ethical and honest to leave something that major out?

The difference between 'a cousin who works as a lifeguard' and a looming pregnancy or recent birth is that the lifeguard has no impact on one's ability to show up and be a productive employee. A looming maternity leave DOES impact an employee's ability to show up and work.

Is it fair to the potential hire to put a great deal of effort and expense into recruiting, hiring and training someone, simply to have that person become unavailable.

As an employer, would you want to hire employees who made a habit of withholding relevant information and important details? Nothing could be more of a slap in the face to a potential employer than submitting a request for maternity leave at the end of the first week.

This is the kind of thinking and action that cause sexism in the workplace to remain. Given the choice between two equally candidates, a male and female, the male would likely win out because he won't be the one to take maternity leave and tend to sick children.

Having said that, I gather that you are currently at home on maternity leave (child has already been born). If this is the case, I can't see any reason not to apply. I would mention on the cover letter that you wouldn't be available to start work with the employer until XYZ date, citing a requirement to give them ample notice of your departure, and leave it at that.

A month or two of 'waiting' is usually worth it for the right employee. It is always better to wait for the right employee tomorrow, than hire a 'mediocre employee' today.

Not every job starts the day after you accept the job offer. I accepted a job offer in mid November, and did not start until mid-January.

My father in accepting a job offer said that he had a pre-scheduled vacation trip and negotiated to start later.

Personally, I'd say go ahead an apply. Then, if it goes that far, you can negotiate a starting date. Worst thing that happens is they say no, and you wouldn't get the job. If you don't apply, you definitely don't get the job anyway.

I agree that you should apply. The hiring process can take a very long time.

Hi to All,
I applied to the open position, unfortunatelly they didn't contact me for an interview and it seems that the position has been filled because it is not longer in their web site. :(

Anyway I tried and may be in the future there will be another opportunity, the good thing is that I had my baby girl and I'm still on maternity leave until February.:biglaugh:

Best Regards,
AC
