Should we register to QS-9000 or TS 16949?

QS9000 to TS?

We are about to submit ourselves for quality systems audit, we are hoping to get QS9000, I argued with my plant manager to rather go straight to TS standard instead, he doesnt agree. Is QS 9000 a thing of the past?

I am not QS 9000 or TS standard expert but my readings about the automotive quality system standard says the TS will be the thing of the future.

Pros and cons please.

Basically QS9000 dies in 2006.

Also if you gain TS16949 registration you are also compliant to ISO9001:2000.

TS is the way to go. If you are a Chrysler supplier, QS goes away in July 2004!

Develop your program to gain certification to TS2. Also, imo, ypu need to obtain the following documents;
--ISO/TS 16949
- Automotive certification scheme for ISO/TS 16949
- Quality system assessment checklist to ISO/TS 16949
- IATF guidance to ISo/TS 16949.
All available from AIAG.

In addition I would suggest the ISO/TS implementation offered by AIAG. I would consider the supplier auditor course UNTIL you have become knowledgable in the TS and supporting documentation.

If you have already set up your system to QS and are ready for audit, I would recommend going for the QS to get your certificate. You can upgrade to TS later. It will cost you more in audit fees in the long run, since you will have to pay for additional upgrade audit days. The advantage of going QS now is that you will be protected with your customer faster. Both are accepted right now. If you are not certified, I am guessing you are under pressure from your customers to get it done.

If you have not set up your system yet, or are not being pressured, I would recommed going for the TS and skipping QS.

I feel out of basic 7 Auto specific requirements 5 requirements which includes PPAP, APQP, MSA, FMEA, SPC are exacly same in both TS 2 or QS 9000. Now only what remains . One is Process model approach which says (Not necessary in documentation ) Process Input, Output, Monitoring and Resourses. One more aditional is in clause 6.2.3 Employee Empowerment which you need to address. So in my openion, It is Three Months Job to convert an QS 9000 to TS 2. Now you decide. I feel Go straightaway to TS 2

With differences with QS I would strongly recommend going straight to TS. QS is on the way out, ISO 9000:1996 is all but dead, no logical reason to spend time and money on something that will have to be re-addressed in a few months. If you have been through a registration audit as the Management Rep or Coordinator on a new system you'll understand the other reasons for not doing it twice!!!!
