Hello!

I've been reading this site a couple a weeks now but have a few questions to ask.

First off:

What if I have a supplier that regulary make changes to the specification, changes the components to a cheaper one and so on. How do I get the signal to the a PPAP so that I can make sure that the new part meets our requirements?

Thanks in advance. :)

Re: Singal from supplier to do a PPAP?

Hi,
welcome on the Forum.
It is a very precious resource to share advice, new and knowledge.
My contribution for your question , waiting for other expert Covers that can help as well.
If you check AIAG Blue book on PPAP, there are reported the items that require for new subsmission or only notification to the customer in case of a change.
Based upon its nature, there is the guideline.
However you can also agree with supplier when to do it.
For example, if there is change in the supplying of the prima raw material, new subsmission of PPAP is needed.
Besides, if there is a stop production for one year and then supplier starts again the production for a specific product, it shall submit again the PPAP.
Pls check the Blue Book or the dedicated forum related to APQP /PPAP on this forum.
Hope this helps:bigwave:

Hello! Thank you for the fast reply.

Unforunatly I don't have the APQP/PPAP manuals (haven't got an approval to buy it yet - so for the time being I'm just looking how to implement some of the parts theoreticaly in our company).

So there isn't an automated requirement for the supplier to reach out and say that they changed a part? We have to agree that they do so in the begining of a project? Makes sense now that I read it a few times.

Edit: By the way. I've read the latest 20-30 threads in the forums I'm most interested in (APQP/PPAP included) these weeks. Started this thread because I didn't find an answe to my question. Hope that's OK!

First of all , you should buy Blue Book and make training on APQP/PPAP.
In the the P.O or Contract with Supplier, you can define requirement , citing the guideline of the PPAP blue book.
Besides, when they signed PSW, they should be aware of PPAP requirements.
Did you check this? How do you ensure that supplier has understood your requirements?:bigwave:

I'll have a look at that. :)

We don't have a PSW, we don't use AQPQ/PPAP. So implementing it is still on a strictly theoretical level. All I'm doing right now is research. :p

Are you in the automotive market, in the sense that you are supplying automotive car maker or their direct suppliers?
Did your customers asked you to sign off PPAP for your supplied products?
Are you ISO TS certified?

Nope, we're not in the automotive market (nothing to do with cars, I hope that it is still okey too ask questions). We are not ISO TS certified so we haven't had anything to do with PPAP. I'm just researching if PPAP could be implemented in our current system because it seems really great.

PPAP is usually applied to the automotive market suppliers and it is requested by major car makers to their Tier-1 suppliers and from these ones to their Tier-2 ones etc... along the supplying chain.
By the way, PPAP is formed of a certian number of Items ( 18) , for instance process flow, p-fmea, control plan, msa, initial studies, engineering specs , msds, etc.. so, we can say that it is a collection for production part approval process, peculiar in automotive. Based upon this, you shall also do those .
If you have another procedure for this and it is agreed with customer, it is ok at the same.
However , your organization shall be ready to support this if it is a need, otherwise I would tend to suggest you to continue as you are doing.
Hope this helps:bigwave:

One thing that has been overlooked (or at least not mentioned) is the instructions and contractual agreements you have made with your supplier.

Are they aware that you require notification of a change in their processes or supply chain? If not, then this is the first step that you should take.

As for being automotive or not, the PPAP process can (at least in theory) be applied to any commodity. You may want to modify the submission requirements to suit your needs, and your suppliers ability to conform (for example, PFMEA is not something that everyone is comfortable with).

There are many here who will be happy to help you out; I am sure that you will get many other responses as well.

Re: Singal from supplier to do a PPAP?

Your issue is with PPAPs, but the problem is bigger. You may need to be informed of ANY change, even if PPAP is not impacted.
Do some web searches for PCN (product change notification or process change notification). It's an agreement with a supplier to notify (or seek approval from) you of product or process changes.

Most companies I've worked in have PCN relationships both ways - us with our suppliers, and our customers with us!
