Significant Production Run - How 300 was determined to be the minimum quantity

#1
I wanted to know how 300 was determined to be the minimum quantity of parts produced for the significant production run by AIAG.

Also, if anyone has an example of how they/or their customers determine when deviations are needed to that number.

Thanks.

Things may have changed since I was in automotive, but the original intent for a significant production run was a shift of production "or a minimum of 300 parts", whichever was greater. The idea was that processes that could make 300 parts in 5 minutes had to run at least a shift and processes that could only run 50 parts per shift had to run a minimum of 300.

From the AIAG PPAP manual, 4th edition:

I think the quantity of 300 is more or less arbitrary. If you can run 300 pieces in one hour, that's all you need to do. If there are questions about the practicality of the default quantity, contact your customer, and whatever the dispensation might be, get it in writing.
