Six months data enough for ISO 50001 implementation?

This might seem to be foolish question, with an obvious answer...anyway, would like to have your inputs.

Can any co, go for an ISO 50001 certification with 6 months of raw data. BY raw I mean, they only have data on energy consumptions in different sections. But they havent really got into the details of it, on how the energy actually is consumed. In the sense, they have a meter that reads values every month and against the production , they calculate, KWH/ton.

Can it be of any use?

Basically am looking for your inputs on how well should the energy consumption be quantified ( the minimum months/years of historical data required) to successfully implement a good EnMS.

Thank you.

Hii Cumarr

I think one of the questions is "why ?"

Why don't they have more data ?

If it is a greenfield, then it could be understood, and depending on how detailed the analysis of this data is, and of the plan to install new equipment based on this analysis and future view of the business, I might consider the possibility rto go for 50001.
But in this case, the plant is very likey to undergo other audits soon, such as ISO TS if it is an automotive company. somay be the 50001 should wait a little to demonstrate first the robustness the of management system in itself, and then apply it to energy.

If the plant has already been running for ages, 6 months raw data is not enough.

On the whole, quick answer to your question would be NO

It is certainly not any foolish that you ask. Such questions crop up before start and it is good that you think on it.
Six months data is a wealth of info... Do you see that this info is the last 6 months ? It can say so much about your "as is" status.
Why not ?
If you can read Win the Energy Challenge with ISO50001 and get to know how you can PDCA with your available data, you go for it.
Like all other standards, with ISO50001 you are on a continual improvement cycle. So begin small and aim big.
All the best.....

Hi somashekar, :bigwave:
Thanks for sharing the link in ISO with regard to Energy Management Presentation. It was indeed a BIG Help on my part as I am very new in this kind of guidelines.
best regards,

I sincerely doubt it from what you provided. I just did a 50001 audit (EnMS) and the organization had energy data going back 3 years. You need to have established bench marks, trending, improvements and such. Six (6) months data may not be a true indicator of consumption because of different weather days, operational needs/changes, and so forth.

Unlike most other standards, except for maybe GHG, 50001 is metric heavy, a good energy performance history is an absolute must.
