Six Sigma comparing to other National and International Models

Hello,

I am an MBA student and got a relevant issue on Six sigma and other models.

Six Sigma as a national (or academic) model besides ISO, TQM, BSC and Juran model are in one category, differs from the international models such as Hoshin model, EFQM, Malcolm Baldrige model.. etc.

My question is not how all of them differ from each other, but what's the difference between the national and international models? :S

I didn't know where to post the issue; it seems that this is the right section.

Many thanks..

I am not sure of your use of the word "model", and national, academic and international. Six Sigma is a Problem solving methodology and set of tools. ISO refers to the International Standards Organization, or as shorthand for one of their standards, such as ISO-9001. Malcolm Baldrige refers to the quality and management standards used to evaluate organizations for the Malcolm Baldrige Awards, the USA quality award. EFQM is a European model fairly similar to Baldrige and the basis for the EFQM Excellence Award. Juran refers to the writing of Joseph juran, which are used and followed internationally. Hoshin Kanri is an originally Japanese , but now more widely used, strategic planning methodology. So you have mentioned a mixed bag of tools, standards, methods, philosophies, evaluation criteria, etc. Most of which are used widely in the international quality community.

exactly. thats my main problem, the professor gave us the assignment as i mentioned, and it messes up my main ideas about those measurements tools -.- but still, the professor needs the difference as i mentioned :S

Geoff has given you a good start in answering your professor's question. He has pointed out the inherent nature of each item you've mentioned (six sigma, ISO, etc.) and since you say you are an MBA student = graduate level, you should be able to research those items and formulate some thesis about how they differ and yet what they can produce when combined. Take a pass at it and see what you can come up with.

Just for clarification, it's International Organization for Standardization. "ISO" isn't an abbreviation; it's a Greek combining form meaning "equal" and was chosen so as to avoid problems with translation of the name of the organization--the initials would be different in different languages.

Jim is correct.

From the ISO site:

Because "International Organization for Standardization" would have different acronyms in different languages ("IOS" in English, "OIN" in French for Organisation internationale de normalisation), its founders decided to give it also a short, all-purpose name. They chose "ISO", derived from the Greek isos, meaning "equal". Whatever the country, whatever the language, the short form of the organization's name is always ISO.

I could came out with the differences, but as i said in the first post the professor put them all in 2 categories : national, international or (academic and non academic) and have to find the difference between the 2 categories not difference between them all, i've been trying to search out for a week for those categories, but non of what i read even categorise them ... should i just say "there's no such categories!" :S
