So, how about Microsoft Windows Vista?

Re: So, how about Vista?

I just built a system for a friend's son and installed Windows XP. You couldn't pay me enough to install a new MS operating system on my personal PC for till they've at least been to Service Pack 2.

It will probably be another 3-4 months before I build myself a new box, but I have already ordered an OEM copy of Windows XP for myself (it has the free upgrade coupon for Vista) just in case the supply starts to dry up. My current system run Windows 2000 and it couldn't have been more stable for me.

An IT friend of mine has been playing around with OpenBSD as an operating for the past year or two and he really likes it. That may be another option. Perhaps Vista is just the break that Linux needs to become more mainstream.

Re: So, how about Vista?

I think that you are confused.... 386's almost always came with 256K standard, 512K was what most of us upgraded to because of Win 3.0 resource hogging. Megs didn't really become popular (affordable) until the 486's. BTW, I did just confirm this with IT
Did 386's ever come with 256k/512k standard? No idea really but what I do know is the memory requirements of Windows 3.0 these are:

- 640K Conventional Memory
- 256K Extended Memory

Windows 3.1 memory reqs were:

- 3 MB RAM (4 MB recommended) and 386SX or higher for file and print
sharing (enhanced mode).
- 2 MB RAM and 80286 or higher without file and print sharing (standard
mode).

Re: So, how about Vista?

I got a chance over the weekend to see a friend's new laptop w/ Vista Home Premium (I believe that was the flavor).

Kinda pretty, the Aero interface w/ the angled-views of the windows was cool, but not enough. The prompts for ok'ing everything got old real fast, and most of the "pretty" features I already had at home w/ XP and add-on's like WindowBlinds, Konfabulator, SideBar, etc...

The idea of using flash drives for extra memory intrigues me though...

Re: So, how about Vista?

I can't see Linux breaking through any time soon for two main reasons.

1. Games and apps generally aren't available on a Linux platform

2. OEM's generally won't preinstall Linux on their PC's intended for home use/ majority of customers don't know what Linux is or even if they are aware of Linux they don't know enough about it so will stick with windows.

I'm not sure of the current situation but the sequel to a popular game called Halo was only going to be able to work under Vista at one point, I'm not sure if this is still the case, to help boost take up of Vista.

Until the market for Linux games and apps increase manufactuers of these products aren't going to spend the money to port them to Linux and without a demand for Linux OEM's are going to stick to Windows.

What Linux needs more than anything else is a "killer app" that will convince the public and the buisness world that Linux is something worth moving to.

Re: So, how about Vista?

What OS does the Xbox use? Just asking because there is sooo much bad press about MS at the moment incl about Vista, to add salt to the wound a lot of Xbox's are packing up with the dreaded ring of death, 3 red lights and you are out!

But I think that maybe a hardware fault!?

Anyway, sounds like MS are going to having a bit of a hard time...... maybe they will only make 10 billion this year!

Re: So, how about Vista?

The Xbox and 360 both run on an OS which has it's roots in Windows 2000. Basically they took Win 2k ripped out everything that wasn't needed by the Xbox and added a few bits and pieces specific to the Xbox, such as the filesystem. for the 360 they took the Xbox OS and built on that.

While they may have started with win 2k I doubt there is much left that could be identified as win 2k, especially in the 360.

Re: So, how about Vista?

Another reason I won't be buying Vista:

amazon.com price: $379.99
amazon.co.uk price: $641.69 (£326.99)
amazon.de price: $642.75 (489.89 Euros)

Europe must be providing a subsidy for users from the usa :p

I think Europe is being punished for this.

Re: So, how about Vista?

Hmm being given another reason not to upgrade to M$ latest pile of bloatware isn't much of a punishment though.

M$ really don't like it when they don't get their way.
