WE achieved a "Green Partnership" award with Honda South Carolina this spring. So SONY isn't the only company looking at this.

First , I am (or used to be) an American who relized that the US isn't the only place that has an abundance of technologically advanced companies and I am not dumbfounded at all, I have a very tight grasp on 14001 and know that the Sony specifications are 200% of what 14001 is. I am all for environmental preservation especially on this (as of yet) unspoiled island paradise. What Sony is proposing is ahead of what the EU and the US are still trying to decide on....that's what is the frustrating part. Especially since the last time I checked XRF testing wasn't free, and there are few ways to perform material analysis to the levels that they require.
As for letting the visionaries pass, wouldn't it seem obvious that if someone in the US could make a similiar technology that more customers would go there for it? I guess looking at exactly what kind of technology this end of the world has may shock you...Let say for instance your a bass fishing kind of guy, next time your out on the lake look at all the fish finders, trackers and basic marine electronics...you may be shocked to see that not only do 85%+ come from NZ but 75% of those are made just a few short meters from me....And we do make more than just movies (think Rachel Hunter...not a bad commodity eh?) Just my two cents. Enjoy your autumn season....summers almost here...Nuff said ...

Along with Honda as my good friend stated take a gander at Seiko. Go even further and look at some other Japanese organizations. There's a shift of focus from Europe to Asia in both the economic world and the environmental world.

I also can't recall ISO 14001 having any percents of anything mentioned so I can't figure out how something can be 200% of nothing.

:topic: Did you just quit being an American or what? Seems kind sad to me :(

No I'm still a citizen, just not a resident. The uncertainty in the US job market (and the lack of employment protection) opened my eyes to the fact that manufacturing isn't only limited to the US and Mexico, but into the far east/ australasia and jobs here are plentiful and secure...once I left I was amazed at how many americans fail to realize that there is another world outside of the US and it's not like National Geographic pictures....most people wear shoes in Africa, and drive cars... :topic:

Reality

Welcome to the world of reality. There are also people living on tree tops but nowadays they take lifts / elevators instead of climbing. Beside wearing shoes instead of walking barefooted, they move around in BMW and Mercs.

Sony Green

We are supplier to Sony as well as many automotive customers & the green partner program provided further justification for our ISO14k program in fact it breathed new life into it. To the points of others.. if we didn't have the 14k we would not have been considered for the business anyway, if you don't want the business then walk. I agree the demands are challenging and an XFR system is expensive ($40k) but you could just require CofA from supplier & rely on outside lab results combined with a carefully worded PO we do both.

In short it's a customer requirement if you want their business then nothing on banned or abolished list goes into the product

i understand the feeling keyplas is going through. nowadays, many companies have established their green procurement policies. for the environment so to speak. the intention was good. but the method of engaging the policies is way way out.

getting suppliers to adhere to new policies is not easy. many of us, including myself see the benefits of implementing such policies, but, by forcing us to comply......... is like threatening us. "do or u dont get any business". the investment is not cheap. xrf cost a bomb. sending to labs for analysis cost money. we dont see much return of our investment, especially when customers are also requesting us to cut cost at the same time.

are we gonna spent $1000 to save $1?

look at the war. the environmental harm and lifes gone, worth more than what we are trying save. shall i suggest we also use lead free bullets and artilleries for the war, so we wont pollute the environment when engaging in war.

penny wise, pound foolish.

Where am I standing? I can see both sides.

Keyplas was just trying to get some support - like most of us surfing the Cove. I can empathize with the frustration (not with Sony though) and I think some of the replies picked up on that rather than the need expressed.

On the topic of 14k versus Sony's green partner program. This links in nicely with some of the other threads on significance of aspects. I don't know Sony's scope of activity but you can bet they have had a look at what they do and worked out that all the aspects happen upstream from them. Raw materials, painting, plating, soldering hence the program. On the global web site you get information about how they arte progressing towards 14k. Perhaps we are are getting an overview of one of their environmental management programmes?

Whilst I have a problem with the stark choice of "If you want Sony money you'll have to dance to Sony music" I do believe any company should be able to develop a decent partnership with Sony - and yes at the end of the day they will pay the initial price for the good work done by their suppliers. Maybe we will all reap the benefits in years to come.
