Ford used to have a manual you had to use on SPC if you were a supplier to Ford. The AIAG has a SPC manual at Details (aiag.org)
. I've not reviewed it, but did find it on a google search.
I recommend that you search for posts by @bobdoering on the application of SPC in precision machining. Bob has extensive experience in this area. Bob recommends using an X hi/lo-R chart in these applications.

AIAG has a great book on SPC, but its content does not properly cover SPC for processes whose output is a function. Traditional SPC assumes the output is random and independent. My studies have shown traditional Shewhart charts will actually give you the exact opposite of the condition of the process. (see my website videos!)
