Can anyone give me a good definition of what "Special Processes" are?

Examples?

Thanks!

:mg:
Manufacturing Process which is directly relate to the Quality of the product is called as "Special Process'

Examples:
Anodising
painting
heat treatment
welding
etc

Don't forget soldering, a special process that's not usually thought of in the above list.

Those examples are considered special, but not all processes related to the quality of product are 'special processes'. Machining, for example, is NOT a special process. Your definition is too broad, IMHO

I have stated a concise answer regarding special process, it needs to be understand in specfic way, special process is the applied after the part is bieng manufactured then again you are treating it by chemical means or mechanical to retard its property or part life to a longer time.

I cannot agree! One example - soldering of electronic components - which isn't a 'treatment applied after the part is manufactured', neither do they affect the part life as you describe. Neither are welding and brazing. All are considered special processes because you cannot inspect the quality in to the finished item!

We have addressed the special processes as they are related to Manufacturing, what about intellectual activies? Someone mentioned the face-to-face interaction, are there any other examples?

LawrenceMD,

Banking used to be a process that owned its customers a duty of care. Accordingly, the banks designed and validated their service delivery processes. Aping investment banks, some banks switched their focus to design (but not validate) financial assets and these seem to have trumped the main street banks' duty of care to its customers.

Beyond banking, a mature system should treat its production processes as special unless it can afford to fully verify its products (including the consequential costs of applying the controls to products instead of their processes).

In other words, design and validate production processes as the norm to prevent nonconformity and to reduce the cost of verification.

BTW, mature systems are organizations that have substantially eliminated the costs of failing to fulfill requirements.

Would bonding two pieces of carbon together be considered a special process, if total cure is not achieved at time of delivery to the customer and the bond may fail (however unlikely) sometime in the future? Would test pieces be acceptable then so long as they are subjected to a qualification program and retained on file?

Yes, bonding, gluing or any other type of 'sticking' stuff together is a special process...

To what extent does the customer have input into how you control a special process such as painting? Checking for FOD , paint adhesion, even coverage, streaks/runs, orange peel are all quite straightforward and "good practice" to a large degree and we're doing that already through operator verification. Our painter is industry experienced, but we don't have a current qualification program in place as yet.

So if the customer HASN'T specified paint thickness, would you control that characteristic as well as a matter of course, since it is a function of the painting process, or would you not measure it because the customer doesn't require you to?
It would seem to me the key word is "deficiencies". If there is no customer and/or design requirement specified as a process output, then the resulting output can't be deemed deficient. Is that a reasonable position to take or not?
