Specification (Significant digits) - Measurement (Medical device)

Hi all,

I was writing a report compiling the data from one of our products.

The specification says Dim A- 0.25±0.05mm
The operators measured this dimension in 3 decimal places
When I recorded the result in a report i rounded it to 2 decimal places as it aligned with the specification.

Other dimensions are
B -0.25±0.05mm
C -0.5±0.2mm
E-0.5 +0.03/-0.05mm

Just to keep the decimal places to the same number as for all the others, I rounded all of them to two significant digits.

My quality manager came back and asked me

1) why I rounded A and B to two decimal places ( answer is mentioned above)?
2) If its to align with the specification, why i didn't align Dim C to one decimal place as the specification only details 1 decimal place?

As my purpose is just to confirm the adherence of these dims to the specifications. I was not too precise.

Please, someone, review this and let me know the right approach and its basis.

Thanks in advance!

Good day @smitha92 ;
I echo your quality manager's question as to "2) If its to align with the specification, why i didn't align Dim C to one decimal place as the specification only details 1 decimal place? .

Can you please help us understand why indeed ?

Thank you.

Be well.

@John C. Abnet

Thank you!
I tried to keep all dimensions to two decimal places in the report.

However, I also made sure, it align with the specification or got more than what is required based on the specification.

I believe ASME Y14.5 indicates that there are an infinite number of zeros to the right of the specification. You cannot round down to bring a result into specification. Any result over the specification limit regardless of the number of significant digits does not meet specification.
