Since there are not enough threads already regarding verification vs validation, I thought that I needed to start another one.:sarcasm:

3.8.4
verification
confirmation, through the provision of objective evidence (3.8.1), that specified requirements (3.1.2) have been fulfilled

NOTE 1 The term “verified” is used to designate the corresponding status.

NOTE 2 Confirmation can comprise activities such as
— performing alternative calculations,
— comparing a new design specification (3.7.3) with a similar proven design specification,
— undertaking tests (3.8.3) and demonstrations, and
— reviewing documents prior to issue.

3.8.5
validation
confirmation, through the provision of objective evidence (3.8.1), that the requirements (3.1.2) for a specific intended use or application have been fulfilled

NOTE 1 The term “validated” is used to designate the corresponding status.

NOTE 2 The use conditions for validation can be real or simulated.
Please give your companies actual examples of specified requirements that are evaluated during verification, and CANNOT be considered validation.

It has been argued that validation is a form of verification, but that does not mean that all forms of verification can be considered validation.:)

When I said (in the other thread) that validation is a form of verification, I was referring to standard denotations of the two words, exclusive of specialized definitions or connotations.

That said, there might be any number of verifications of specified requirements that won't bear on usability of the product. For example, there might be clearance holes in a panel that must be measured for layout purposes, but whether or not they meet the drawing tolerance has no bearing (within reason) on whether the assembled product will function as designed. As I also pointed out elsewhere, it's altogether possible that a product will meet specifications but not function as intended. Whether this phenomenon is a result of misbegotten design input or not is irrelevant to the idea of validation being a separate entity from verification. We do design validation, in fact, because things like that are known to happen.

I have worked with clients whose business depends on the ability to match colors. The way this usually works is the potential customer gives a sample of an object of the desired color. The company turns the object over to a color matching lab. The lab attempts to formulate a match. They verify it using sensitive color matching instrumentation. If it passes the lab's verification, they send a sample of the product to the customer.

The customer participates in validating the colorant by making their own products with it. If the resulting products have a satisfactory color match according to the customer's tolerances, validation is successful and the customer generally orders production batches of the colorant.

That's just one example of a situation where a product can meet specifications but still not be suitable for use.

A better example perhaps occurs in the software industry, where developers have been known to hear this from customers, "You built us exactly what we asked for. We hate it and can't use it."
