Specifying a MINITAB PC Hardware - What matters?

Hello! For my first post I have an intriguing question..

I use MINITAB for electrical test data, batch data are in the order of 200k rows and 20 columns - combined datasets are in the order of a few million rows.

I am hampered by very long processing times when performing analysis like prob. plots vs batch for two variables - these can be tens of minutes with MINITAB using all of one processor and a whole bunch of RAM. To speed my work up I am specifing a new desktop, but what actually matters?

More cores? or does MINITAB not use multi-threading heavily? (or at all)
Faster cores? - this seems a no brainer.
More RAM? - As a 32bit application, I can't see this helping.
Faster RAM? - Again a no-brainer.
SSD? - This should help, but does MINITAB use a lot of paging?


My current desktop is an i5-3470 (4 cores, 4 threads) @ 3.2GHz with 4GB DDR2.

What experience do you users have with upgrading, large datasets and MINITAB?

Have you contacted Minitab directly for recommendations?

Also, how is your data collected? Is it this massive because of a high sampling rate? I have analyzed a few such data sets. Each time, I found serious autocorrelation and had to sample every nth point to eliminate the autocorrelation before performing an analysis. This allows reducing the sampling frequency and reducing the size of the data file.

Hi,

I have contacted MT - they refer me to the minimum spec requirement - which is no help.

The data are from discrete parts, each ~ 300um square, manufactured on thin disks of silicon, each row is one device. The device count can be >300k per disk.

Sampling these data for analysis is a possibility, but yield issues can be spacial, regularly repeating or random - so the scheme would have to be carefully though about.

For yield reports there will be some reluctance in not using the entire dataset.
