Hello,

Can you explain this 2 terms?

Start of Saleable
Ship to Commerce

You can find it in GP5 from GM. Example of use:

Launch Downtime
A downtime incident, between Start of Saleable and Ship to Commerce, which impacts the launch of a new product and meets the Production Downtime definition .

Thanks
Piotr

Yeah! Jargon can be maddening. As a modern kid might say:
"What the . . . ?"

The simplest solution is to just call or email GM and ask, "What does this mean in plain English?"

They are pretty loose terms meaning the following:

Saleable builds are builds of product that is deemed saleable, BUT are not shipped for full production intent, so they will not be shipped to line for full production. They are deemed a stage further than Prototype and Initial Pre Production builds.

Saleable builds usually include pre production builds that could produce SALEABLE vehicles. For example.... Press Vehicle Production, Field evaluation units etc....

I believe ship to commerce is the start of full production, so the parts would shipped to line for use in full production builds as stipulated by the customer. However, I must warn you that I have never heard a GM representative use this term before, so I could be wrong!

In terms of the Saleable Builds, this is the correct definition. I have just finished some big projects for GM and they included these builds.

I hope this helps!

My owwn copy of GP5 is apparently outdated and doesn't include that definition, but based on my own experience, I'll offer an educated (and potentially wrong) surmisal. In general, when GP5 refers to "downtime," it means downtime of their lines. Because the definition refers to "launch" downtime and "Start of Saleable" I'm guessing they're referring to their own post-prototype builds; production of saleable vehicles. "Ship to commerce" probably refers to shipment of vehicles by GM to dealers.

If all of that is true, "Launch Downtime" refers to incidents that occur after the production of saleable vehicles has commenced, but before any of them are shipped to dealers.

But as Wes suggests, it's best to ask the customer if you're not sure.
