What is the best way to approach a brand new quality system within my company? Where is a good starting point?

First step: Use the search function. There has been numerous posts and responses on this topic. Here is a post with other posts about implementing a QMS

Second step (my questions):

1. How long have you been in the Quality Field?

2. Does your management fully support the Quality System?

3. Is your company willing to provide all resources necessary ($$$, time, training, personnel, et all) to implement and manage the system?

4. Could you be more specific of what service or product your company provides?

5. How well do you understand the Standard (ISO9001:2008)?

6. Have you ever developed and implemented a Quality Management System?

I don't mean to sound harsh, but this information will help to better assist you and others in this project.

Starting point?

Simple.........Be able to answer the question "Why?"

Unless you can say "why" you're just gonna spin your wheels and go in circles.

Try this approach: put yourself in the shoes of your customers and imagine, if your customers had their way, how would you run your business processes? Now, step in your top management shoes and try to imagine how your organization should run your business processes in order to maximize return on the investment. From these two "diametrically opposing" perspectives, find a system that satisfies both parties. Voila': you have a new QMS.

Sounds difficult? It is.

A much easier approach is to design a system around an universally deployed and accepted protocol, which gives you tremendous flexibility, while still focusing on customer satisfaction.

The name of the protocol? ISO 9001.

Here's something I've used for fun.........

The Ferengi “Great Material Continuum”

"You have to have faith in the Great Material Continuum… it’s the force that binds the universe together… it’s everywhere in the universe. There are places filled with too much of one thing and not enough of another. The Great Continuum flows through them all like a mighty river, from 'have' to 'want' and back again. And if we navigate the Continuum with skill and grace our lives will be filled with everything our hearts desire… Trust, and the river will provide." - Nog ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine")

What is required are tools or instruments to help navigate the treacherous waters of the Continuum of the Business World.

NOTE* The Continuum is the Business World, The “Have’s” are the suppliers and the “Wants” are the customers. ISO 9001 & ISO 14001 are navigation tools that can bring them both together.

Hi...

The best way to start is with the quality policy from top management which will then be followed by qulaity objectives, quality plan etc and the rest will automatically take over.

Over here we call that approach wishful thinking. Emphasis on wishful.

Ya, that is business by hopeful ideals, I believe. Top down is not always with strategy or tactical battle plan. While top down is neededfor support of any change, implementation or maintaining, "the rest will follow" is too generic.
