As part of CMMI high maturity implementation an organization needs to demonstrate use of statistical models for predictive management of software engineering and management processes. Through this thread I would like to invite others to share their experiences on development and use of such statistical models. Of special interest would be any information on the various big Y, small y and small x that have been used in building such statistical models.

I am not really getting in what extent a statistical model can help us in any way in the management of software engineering.
And I can not get my head around what "predictive management of software engineering" might be ...
The only model I can recall is a cone of uncertainty that is relevant for planning, however that is an overall stuff rather than a particular statistical method.

I am not sure which business you are in.
Are you referring to software development in a sense when you have a bunch of engineers writing code that end up in some gadget eventually?

If so, I assume you have a set of performance metrics in terms of e.g sw performance, sw stability, crashes etc. Some SW companies have a bunch of developers that constantly contribute with new SW patches and updates into a big code tree in a build environment. The build system generates a version of the SW product in given discrete time intervalls. The output of this process can then be tested on a system level continuously and compared with older version. These test objects can be measrured in terms of the set up metrics for instance.

If this is the case, it is possible of course to apply statistical tests to see if there is an real difference between two versions of SW and based on that be able to take fact based decision instead of guessing. It could also be possible to predict the expected future performance in some way.

But perhaps this is not at all what you are after.
