I agree - 14 dollars

C

\$4 and a cigar.

I was at \$14 from the get go, but not at a computer I could respond from. Then I saw all this. I'm sticking with the guys at \$14.

Initially I'm down 1 cigar and up 1 fake \$10 bill.
After getting change, I'm down 1 cigar and up \$10 in real cash.
After giving the customer his change, I'm down 1 cigar and up \$6.
After repaying the cafe owner his \$10 I'm down 1 cigar and \$4.

db, can I trade my cigar for a shot of Kentucky's finest?

I say there is not enough objective evidence to answer that question.

Time to turn in your Mensa cards.

Nifty little brain teaser. Craig is correct. The owner trades the fake \$10 bill to cafe owner for 10 \$1s and gives 4\$1s change keeping 6\$1s. The owner has to go into the till for \$4 more to add to the 6\$1 leftover when the cafe owner brings the fake \$10 back. So therefore, the owner is out \$4 cash from the till and 1 cigar which totals \$10. Hence the confusion. But since the question said to ignore the cost of the cigar, \$4 is the correct answer. Lucinda thinks it is \$8 but she forgets that the owner never dipped into the till to make change originally. QED. How embarrasing

Yes, Neil, that was my logic.

Since there was no prize mentioned, guess I'll just have to make do with this cigar and the \$4 change I got for some Monopoly Money this morning.

Okay

Craig is correct!

You would be out only \$4, above the cost of the cigar. The unfortunate thing is the only prize is the knowledge that you got it right first.

I think you will be out more than that since your business is destined to fail.

It is early in the day, and you have no change in the till.

This indicates that you are not prepared

db said:
You go next door to the café to get change.

If you keep leaving customers in your shop unsupervised, you'll eventually loose everything

db said:
She hands you the bill and sure enough, it is a forgery.

If you can tell that it's fake now, why didn't you notice before?

All of this indicates a lack of business sense, and you probably desrved to loose your money.
