A nonconformance received during our audit was:
"The supplier shall perform subcontractor quality system development..."

We were told we need something other then a "supplier survey".
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Here's a simple one which works well with us.

Have the key suppliers "self-assess" their business against QS, review the results with them, agree/dis-agree with their score.

Identify the area's of weakness which impact on your business, agree action plans to improve the current situation. Don't try to get them fix everything at once, but select bite size chunks.

It's up to you to decide how much control you exercise over a supplier. Some may need more and some may need no help. It is all up to you. But once you deem help/development necessary then stick to it.

I suggest you take everything you've learned from your customer as to "How not to treat a supplier" and keep it close at hand. You'd be surprised how easy some problem are removed just by offering help and your expertise!

Visit 4 suppliers per year and review their quality operating system. Document your recomendations for improvement.

I went from Quality Manager dealing with customers to Purchasing Agent dealing with suppliers - I try very hard to do just this.
