Supplier Checking With Gauge Pin

We have been having an issue with a Supplier drilling threaded holes that are over sized(minor diameter). So we requested a Corrective Action. In their 8D report, They stated they will start checking the threaded holes using a Gauge Pin for minor diameter. Gauge Pin size: 5.154. The standard calls out for minor diameter of 4.917 - 5.153 for an M6x1 thread, Now the debate here is, Should the NOGO Gauge Pin be 5.154 or 5.153, I've searched google and seems like everyone is on different sides of the fence on this.

First, I would question the usefulness of arguing over 0.001mm (~.00004"), especially for a screw thread. That aside, if the no-go pin is 5.153, it means that some parts that are within the tolerance can be rejected, as a 5.153 pin won't fit in a 5.153 hole. This assumes that the pins are at their nominal value and not "plus" or "minus" pins. The supplier is trying to protect against compliant parts being rejected.

I agree with Jim - checking a threaded minor diameter to a tolerance of 0.001mm is an exercise in futility. If I were the supplier, I would be using a thread NOGO gauge, or measuring the actual dimensions of the thread (variable data) to determine if there is a problem, and what area(s) to focus on to correct it.
