Supplier survey - 200 to 250 duppliers

Dear all,

we are currently having approx 200 a 250 suppliers who deliver on regular basis , as this is a huge number & we would like to narrow down the number of suppliers and in the meantime trying to detect the weaknesses of our suppliers in the entire quality domain.

We would like to do this by means of an online survey where they can fill in how good or bad they are related to certain quality aspects :

I'm thinking in terms of entrance inspection, complaint handling, process follow-up , calibration, LEAN knowledge, SPC knowledge ... do you guys have any input which topics should be taken along in the survey or has anyone ever made the same exercise ?

Doesn't your organization have all the information on how good or bad your suppliers are in context to your needs?

What makes you think that suppliers will be completely honest? Will you seriously cut suppliers based on a self supply survey which presumably will output a numerical figure to judge your suppliers? What makes you think suppliers will even respond? How big are you compared to your suppliers and how much of your business makes up their total business?

I'd talk to whoever talks to your suppliers (admin, purchasing, quality, engineering etc) and ask their feedback on who your poor suppliers are, if any.

You could employ a risk based approach by focusing on critical suppliers and other direct suppliers and leave out the indirect suppliers.

Does a supplier's lean or SPC knowledge really add value? If they are supplying you on-time, in-spec, at a good cost...are you going to stop buying from them if they don't understand the benefits of upper/lower control limits in production processes or if they haven't VSM'd or 5S'd themselves?

Similar to the path @Johnny Quality suggested, work with your internal stakeholders to understand how they assess supplier performance.

And, as @Ajit Basrur indicated, consider focusing on critical suppliers first - again, work with those internal stakeholders to identify what criteria must be met in order to classify a supplier as "critical."
