The All-Party Parliamentary Group on Management (APPG), led by the President of the Chartered Management Institute, and Chaired by a Member of Parliament, wants to investigate why so many managers and CEOs say that they know what ?good? looks like, yet spectacularly fail to deliver it .

What has been your experience?

What examples do your have that justify such a claim?
What examples of management and leadership excellence would you give that would improve future performance and deliver growth?

Is this yet another example of government trying to tell businesses how they should operate? I suppose being from the US, I'm just unfamiliar with this organization and their purpose.

I don't think so. Here are the stated objectives:

OBJECTIVES
The Commission is seeking to develop practical and targeted recommendations for politicians and senior leaders that can deliver a tangible impact on managers to support the UK?s future growth agenda. This will focus on three key areas:

  1. Current situation - how good is management and leadership in the UK and how does this compare internationally?
  2. Future skills needs ? what is the potential impact of global markets, technology, workplace and societal trends on management and leadership skills and behaviours?
  3. Pathways to progress ? what are the key enablers that can raise the game of aspiring managers and leaders to help them achieve success in this future context?
It seems they are simply seeking facts one way or the other at this stage.

I skimmed their website, and it seemed like it was as you describe it. I guess I'm just jaded and overly cautious when I see any manner of government official involved in anything that uses the word "investigate."

If they feel their endeavor can improve the management environment, then more power to them.

Unlike our government at least the British government is not forcing employers to provide health insurance!

Based on the stated parameters of the survey, in my opinion, they simply need to get all these aspiring "managers" to actually adopt and practice Deming's System of Profound Knowledge (SoPK.)

Yes, it is not rocket science. But being as managers still fail spectacularly we find it harder to accept that the solution was staring us in the face.

Especially when we look in the mirror!
