Hello.

I understand that users of a British standard want to say that it is an international document if this document is used by many companies in many countries, or if adopted by the some national standardization organisms to build their own national standard, rather than to use the corresponding international document. But BS OHSAS 18001 is really a british not international document.

But personally when I left France to go to the USA I don't become American, or Chinese if I am going in China...

Other illustrations: ISO survey of managment system certifications don't consider the case of BS OHSAS 18001, ISO 26000 cotes only ISO 9000, ISO 14000 and ILO-OSH, U.S.A and Russia have based their own OSH national standards on international ILO-OSH modell ...

Regards.

Friends,

The main goal is to protect our workers from harm in the work place.
Is it then really important what label or number is placed on this document?

Be safe.

Stijloor.

Hello Stijloor !

I quite agree and I prefer this area of discussion (standard choice among several possible OHSMS models by analyzing their intrinsic qualities relation to my goals, instead of taking the best known example or my neighbor one).

It is through this process of analysis and comparison as I proceeded, and resulted in selecting ILO-OSH, more legitimate, more professional, more explicit, more relevant, more responsive for OSH prevention that a single copy of ISO 14001 (BSI has just replaced the word "environment" with the words "Safety and Health at Work" when he was already an other and excellent OHSMS british standard).

If we are talking between OSH specialists, ILO-OSH and technical annexes of BS 8800 and/or ANSI Z10 form an excellent "toolbox" to protect workers from safety and health harms at working conditions in our companies."

Best regards.

BSI has just replaced the word "environment" with the words "Safety and Health at Work"

Sorry but I can't support their decision. 'Environment' and 'OSH' are altogether different aspects of business.

If 'environment' is replaced with "Safety and Health at Work", how they deal with what is beyond the work (I mean 'workplace) that they pollute?

Hi Samsung !

I did not mean that the subject of the "Environment*" is foreign to the company's business ... I just wanted to say that the object ("E") of ISO 14001 had been replaced by another ("OS&H") to create BS OHSAS 18001.

* Regarding "Environment" I can't support to read that impacts of our business activities are only "pollutions"...

Bye.

Sorry but I couldn't follow what you mean to say.

I didn't mean so. 'Pollution' is one of the facets of 'environment' and every business does pollute the environment in one way or the other. I don't say that organizations don't control pollution, yet the environment gets polluted.

Hi Samsung !

My english is quite poor and perharps I explain wrongly my ideas. I try again.

1rst idea :
In my 30th October 2010 06:06 PM message I observed that BSI had a good OSHMS standard (BS 8800) and then created a second one (BS OHSAS 18001) only copying and pasting ISO 14001 (regarding Environment) and just changing some words. I think it's the reason this second BS is not very good*, compared to other OSHMS standards specially and directly built for OSH management (ILO-OSH, ANSI Z10, CSA Z1000, AS/NZS..., etc).

* note : we might ask also whether ISO 14001 is really so relevant and sufficient for the Environment (such as ISO 9001 appears to be for the quality, or ILO-OSH for occupational safety & health) or if it does not deserve to be a little more robust and professional. But that's another story and I'm not an expert of the Environment (nor Quality).

2nd idea (but unrelated to the OSHMS standards topic)
I did not understand clearly your 30th October 2010 06:24 PM message (maybe can you explain or restate it more clearly for me) but it's seems to me reduce the environment concept only to pollution impacts of our businesses. But typically the consumption of natural resources and biodiversity are other aspects in the preservation of our environment.

Have a nice sunday.
