Tapes and Multimeters - Identification on Instrument

Hello,

Here is a "common problem" most of us have been faced with in industry, as quality practionners : you have an audit and auditor report a finding that he has found a tape, a multimeter without calibration.:(

Cause is 2 folds :

  • Multimeters and tapes sometimes belong to production employee, and/or:agree1:

  • the multimeter (or tape) is use "just for a quick validation".

I'm searching the exact sentence that should be put on the instrument ... something like : "NOT UNDER CALIBRATION PROGRAM" ... (Any suggestions BTW ? ;) ) ...

But my REAL question is the following :

"Could I mention into the ISO calibration management program procedure that ONLY measuring instruments that are on the list of Quality Department are under calibration control - none of the others - and that the personnel use only calibrated instruments when they must take a measure for which treacability is of prime order" ?

How do you manage through this at your plant ?

Thank you ! :bigwave:

Les,
As long as the personnel's "non-calibrated" tapes aren't being used to pass or fail product you should be okay. One thing you can put on all of the other tapes is a "for reference only" sticker or something. I think if you stated what you stated in your procedure it would be okay as long as somebody doesn't use a tape measure in the way they aren't supposed to.

Where I work, we use "For Reference Use Only". We don't allow personal tools.

Controlling measuring and monitoring equipment by saying all items not on the list are not calibrated or are not to be used for acceptance measurements is not pro-active at all; to prevent any ambiguity, I would strongly recommend identifying all monitoring and measuring tools with either a calibration sticker or a "For Reference Use Only" sticker.

Because the "reference only" tag can be something of a lightening rod for auditors, mainly because it's been used to avoid calibrating things that should be calibrated, I like to use "Calibration not Required." Regardless of the sticker used, you need to be able to justify the decision.

Agreed, Jim. "For reference only" is actually a confusion for people if it's NOT calibrated. (look up the definition sometime to see what reference means). Why would anyone be confident in a gauge they can reference, when the actual condition is unknown?

An effective system for controlling measuring equipment allows, as you say, for exclusions to be made and a clear indication of that state.
