I was just wondering if anyone (particularly people from software company) can share some of the technical quality interview questions or interview tips when applying for quality specialist? This is because I will be interviewed in around 3 days and would like to get some preparation for the technical interviews.

Thank you.

Your interviewers will be focused on how your skills and experience prepare you to quickly transition and fulfill their needs. I would therefore do as much research as possible to understand what this company produces and the trends and goals, such as new projects, products, or business growth. I would carefully read the job description and be ready to describe how your skills meet the requirements listed by the advertisement and grasp how that would help them meet their goals.

It may help to consider if this company's QMS is mature or not, as the type of technical functions they would need you for could vastly differ. For example, I would not expect a startup software company to do software FMEAs.

I hope this helps!

It also depends on the position you are applying for. I'm not sure what a 'quality specialist' does.

the questions asked for a dimensional inspector will differ from a non-destruct test operator from a visual inspector. Similarly (in addition to the industry/product specific questions) a Quality engineer will be different from a Reliability engineer will be different from a Quality Systems administrator.

Some questions to consider:

  • What do you know of our software products and services?
  • How would your quality skills help us?
  • How would you measure the quality of our software products/services?
  • How would you help us improve our performance?
  • Nobody likes documentation, especially software people: how would you get them on-board with quality?
  • Quality techniques historically are mostly concerned with manufacturing: how can quality help us specifically with software?
  • What do you think of the CMM? TickIT?
  • How do you think ISO 9001 and certification would help us? How long would it take to get certified? How would we do it?
  • We use Agile. Is that okay in ISO 9001?
  • Why can't software quality be assured with testing? Why do we need "process management"?
  • Our software deliveries are frequently late. What would you do to bring them in on time?
  • We have too many bugs: what can we do to reduce defect rates?
  • What would you do on your first day with us?

Good luck,
Pat

You came to us in August with questions about a software manager test (which turned out to be for someone else.) Is that the case here? Are YOU the one interviewing or someone else?

In any regard, Jennifer's advice is spot on. Candidates who have done sufficient research on a company should be aware of what areas are important to that company and can prepare their presentations to show how the candidate can offer value to the company to help in those areas. Waiting until actually at the interview to find out what areas are of concern to the company severely limits the candidate in preparing responses to questions. Candidates with weak responses are not likely to motivate an interviewer to recommend a candidate for a position.

I'll be interviewed this week. The CMST question was for my wife.

I am no expert on this matter at all. My little advice is that you keep your software knowledge at your finger tips. I believe that interviewer generally watch out for promptness, confidence and responsibility in interviewees.

Take out time to find out more or do a research on the company. Know what they are into, their strengths and weaknesses too. Give them reason to believe that you would be a huge asset to them, especially in terms of improving their weaknesses. That could be your selling point

Visit trending software websites and see & know what softwares are trending just so that they believe that you are up-to-date. That you are not a lazy person.

If you are asked a question that you don't have answers too. Cleverly find a way around it. You could be diplomatic about it but please don't look clueless.

I am just a young guy. Hope my simple suggestions help.

Wish you all the best!

I have been interviewed many times and I have also conducted many interviews.

All the advice received so far is excellent but in my opinion, the advice from Jennifer is rock solid.

Do the research and go for it. :read:
