The new phone book's here!!!
Yesterday I found the new AT&T phone directory on my doorstep and immediately recognized that it wasn't as thick as it should be. This was because there were no residential listings in it--it's Yellow Pages (business listings) only.
In side there's a page that says that residential directories are no longer being distributed to everyone, but that you can get one if you ask for it, either in paper form on a CD. They also gave a URL where the residential listings may be accessed.
After thinking about it, I realized that I couldn't remember the last time I looked for a residential listing in a phone book, and that I don't need one. I also thought about a friend of mine back in the 1970s in Chicago who was police officer. He told me that a phone book (3-4" thick and heavy) was sometimes used to encourage reticent suspects to share information by hitting them over the head with it (it didn't leave a mark). Try that with a CD-ROM.

Kudos to them. I agree I haven't used the phone book for residential numbers much either. I always use the net when looking for someone that needs to be served.
