I learned to play tennis at Tosebo. My Mom and I went to Sears and bought a tennis racket for $3. The first time I played was in the Tosebo tennis tournament, junior division, which I won. This was not such an remarkable feat since only a few people actually entered the contest. I eventually beat one of my tentmates, Chuck Schuman, in the finals. I remember that there was a soft spot on the court where the ball didn’t bounce very well. Most of the court was made of a clay/dirt mixture. This area was mostly sand. Sportsmanship required that the ball not be hit there too often. Since this was the first time that either of us had even held a racket, we both served underhanded. I went on to win the next two years in the ‘senior’ division, though again I don’t think that there was ever much competition. I remember almost salivating when looking at the nice tennis courts in Red Park. I always wondered why we couldn’t use those, at least for the tournaments. However, I knew that was verboten to even go there, so I never did. I’ve played tennis most of my life and it is still one of my favorite sports.
