Terms "Customer-directed sources" and "Directed-Buy"

Hi all,
I have a problem with the understanding of the terms customer-directed sources and Directed-Buy. They are not clear for me. Are they exactly Customer-approved sources (as stated in TS 16949:2009)? If so, why did they changed the term "approved" to "directed"? What is the meaning of directed-Buy?
I couldn't find any clear definition in dictionaries.
Do you have any explanation?
Thanks all.

Hi, Thank you for pointing out this difference.

It is just my guess.

Sometimes all sources are needed to be approved by the customer, regardless of whether they were selected by the customer or by the organization.

Therefore the term customer-approved sources then include any sources that were selected by the organization but eventually approved by the customer.

So they changed to a more specific term "Customer-directed" to mean the selection is done by the customer and the organization can not choose. Therefore the customer-directed sources are not applicable to the requirement 8.4.1.2 Supplier selection process.

Hi all
Are you agreed on below meanings:

1. Directed-Buy means “ordered-buy” because the customer has obligated/ asked/required the organization to buy from the customer-specified supplier.

2. Customer-directed sources means “ customer-ordered/required sources” because directing means ordering or requiring.

I don't agree. I don't see a difference between the terms at all.

A directed-buy component is one where the customer tells you "You will purchase this component from this supplier. You cannot make your own sourcing decision." (Though you typically THEN own all the problems ... and those type suppliers are typically poorly responding because - they know you have no choice but to use them).

I don't see a difference between "directed-buy" and "customer-directed sources." To me, the English words mean the same.

Now, "customer approved sources" is different. Here, you ARE making the sourcing decision, just not with whomever you want. They must be on a customers approved supplier list.

"customer-directed sources" means the supplier appointed by your customer, the raw material bought and paid by you. You have no right to choose the supplier.

"Directed-Buy" means the raw material bought and paid by your customer and shipped, by either your customer or the supplier, to you. You may know or not which is the supplier. So again, you have no right to choose the supplier.

We are a Directed supplier (directed by Tesla) to a major automotive tier 1 supplier; it does mean that they had no choice in who to buy our component from.

Now that the already approved my PPAP, they tell me that Tesla must approve it. Anyone else dealt with this?

Clause 8.4.1.3 says "Customer-directed sources (aka Directed Buy)

Hence, they are the same.

Both mean, a customer can specify that a supplier buy from who they want you to buy from.
