A previous post for the IWA 2:2007 got me thinking. I was interested in the standard but not so interested to go out and buy it. (I make exactly the average of the american worker).
Soooo I just inter library ordered it from my local university and it should be here in 2 - 3 weeks free. Anyone esle have any good tips?

but, what am I missing here? that means that your library will own a copy, and you can presumably go there and read it, or check it out? How does that help you in the long run, you still don't own a copy for your business, right?

Re: The best way to get standards without violating copyright

I think I get the gist:
Many times, folks are "curious" and would like to browse the subject document, but don't want to pay full price for something they may never need to have as a personal copy.

If, after reading a borrowed copy, they decide they NEED their own copy, they can purchase it.

When I was a struggling law school student, I read many things in the law library. When I became an executive for an investment bank, I created my own personal library of legal reference works, simply because the economics of my time made it more economical to purchase the books than to take time away from my office to visit a library to read them there.

When I retired from investment banking, I no longer needed frequent legal referencing and reverted back to my library days, helped immeasurably by internet access in recent years.

Sometimes, we only need a paragraph or, at most, a chapter from a reference work - it makes sense to borrow such a document instead of buying it.

Often, things available for free over the internet are more useful than anything we could have purchased ANYWHERE as recently as ten years ago. One such document which comes to mind has a link here in the "Cove" as a useful document for Quality wonks like me

See? this is why it is so wonderful being part of the Cove family. My only thoughts were (because we are working on a new standard) having to own a copy. Light bulb flash! you don't always have to have the standard, lol!:bonk:

Re: The best way to get standards without violating copyright

Years ago, I needed to research some ASTM standards for myself (nothing to do with an employer). The local community college had a set in their reference area.

Libraries are still a great source of free information.

Re: The best way to get/view standards Free without violating copyright

Often, when a standard that is being revised is in the draft stage, such as recently was the case with ISO TS 11135-02, you can view or print it for free. Also, for those who have workplace safety responsibilities, some NFPA standards can be viewed for free.
