When supplier auditing is chosen, then building competency for auditing and narrowing down the scope for effective audit results is vital.
Think outsourcing this supplier auditing to third party professional audit agencies. Cover the same well with your supplier in terms of agreements established.
When unplanned or unprofessional, very common things that happen in this process is as you are facing "Blame it on audit" or "Official vacation" situations .....
I say this because, bad internal audits gets cushioned while bad supplier audits gets a kick, as you are dealing outside of your organization.
