The Elsmar Cove Coffee Shop

Craig:

I have to agree with you on the biscuits - heaven on a plate (my commercial favs are from Cracker Barrel)

However, I can't agree with you on the bacon thing. Most of the bacon I get served in the USA is so crispy it explodes like a fragmentation bomb and flies off the plate:mg: Indeed, some form of protection should be worn to avoid injury from flying shards of pig......:mg:

Real bacon behaves like meat, not an explosive device..:lmao:

I have to question calling grits a delicacy, aren't they more of a staple? You can't have breakfast around here without grits. (I get a special dispensation, I've done so good assimilating myself in all other areas that they allow me the sin of not eating grits) To me, grits should be served with milk and sugar, just like oatmeal or cream of wheat. But that will get me 50 demerits.

Tyker, you will not upset us, well maybe a redneck or two, but most of us will allow you your opinions.:biglaugh: Here, we have a huge British influence on our foods. After all, the English did settle here abouts 400 years ago. But, for the most part, we've been able to overcome that, too. All except for the crazy use of vinegar on french fries. What's up with that?

We call those "cat head" biscuits, Craig, because a good, I mean really good, cat head biscuit is as big as a cat's head. My mother made the very best cat head biscuits I've ever eaten...
You wouldn't happen to have one I could borrow RIGHT NOW, would you?

"Cat head" biscuits...wow! I heard one of my Southern buddies talking about his Grandma's biscuits...and tears were coming into his eyes... That's how emotional he got... Memories... Southern food is almost like religion..

Stijloor.
Actually, southern food and religion are very close relatives. If you ever get invited to a church "covered dish"* lunch, cancel all other commitments.

*a "covered dish" meal is where everyone makes their specialty and brings it to the church social hall to share with everyone else. Forget doing anything else the rest of the day, 'cause a nap is going to take up a good part of the afternoon.

That is if the little old ladies let you leave before the last morsel of food is eaten! You may have to call in sick with "the sugar" the next day cuz you'll still be sleeping it off.

Religion and food, yes, food here can be a near religion. The best thing you can tell someone about their cooking? "oh, man, that was so good it makes me want to slap my mama." The thought process being that you always thought your mama was the best cook in the world, but now you realize that perhaps you've been misled, or maybe mama's been sandbagging all these years, she really could have done better. Please note, in Virginia, you can say "throw rocks at my mama" instead of "slap my mama" (well except for NOVA (northern virginia) and they don't count anyway, cuz they are not part of the South. And when describing a dish brought to the covered dish, it is appropriate to say "this here XXXX, will make you want to slap yo mama!"

Well, then, I have a solution. Take the properly cooked, crispy bacon

and put several slices (6, 8, 14, or so) on a slice of toast, add a piece of lettuce and a couple slices of the tomato that you just picked from the garden, slather some mayo on another piece of toast, assemble and enjoy. The toast, tomato, and lettuce will absorb any shrapnel.

Man, what us yanks have to do to be helpful to our British friends.

:bigwave:

What now? Lettuce and mayo for breakfast? Eww!

I'm surprised you didn't add in some maple syrup! Oh, yeah that comes on the outside of the bacon that's a bomb, doesn't it? And you folks wonder about us eating black (blood) pudding, kidneys and suet pudding for breakfast? hang on, give me Finnan haddies too.....

I bet if you deep fried them, kidneys wouldn't be too bad...
