Line down, unable to meet customer delivery schedule due to supplier incoming parts quality problem.

The keys to get supplier to ship consistent good parts are
  • Part validation test are able screen potential reject
  • Supplier validation process must follow customer application requirement
  • Inspection process is effective to screen out defect parts
  • 100% test and inspected
  • Anything more you can think of?
Sounds basic? You will be surprise that most company are struggling to do the top 3 items effectively

Ship good parts could be different from manufacturing consistently good parts.

The fastest way to get parts is to change the spec until the parts are acceptable...Now whether that is acceptable is another question. But it is a convenient way to solve a supply issue :)

All of those questions are reflections of symptoms of misaligned quality expectations between the supplier and customer. As a customer, those are all questions that I would settle before a PO is ever issued. Ideally, a supplier would have a robust enough quality process to do their own risk management, and determine if, say, 100% test/inspection is even necessary. That would make my PO terms a mere formality.

Fundamentally, fast, cheap, good: pick any two...or pick two of any one.

If I am asking if a supplier is able to screen their own product effectively, AND I'm simultaneously suffering from a line-down situation due to supplier quality, I probably chose cheap+cheap. That may not have been the best business decision :)

Some ideas:

Design with standard parts (off the shelf is good)
Choose suppliers with expertise in that part
Avoid difficult to manufacture or novel production methods

If only it was that simple...
It is that simple, doing simple task effectively will get you where you want. This a fast way to get quality product by screening and from screening only drive for improvement. Some supplier feel the pain of screening and they have motivation to improve The approach I have taken in my 30 years career in quality engineering

Generally Change spec means you are changing customer requirement. it could be one way if it is a gray area and the "spec does impact form fit and function of the product.

Ed, Definitely design is the best way to achieve zero defect and adopt DFX principle, however this will take time, therefore you will need a containment plan. Moreover the world is haunted with old legacy product which adopt over the wall design approach

Optomist1, Qualification is a very subjective subject, that would very depend who create the qualification process and who conduct the qualification process. Supplier could be qualify by standard of that time.

So why don't we start earlier than manufacturing to ensure supplier performance? Where is design that is fit for purpose and manufacture? Where is appropriate supplier selection? We can't go back to "100% test and inspected" to ensure supplier performance.

In B2B situations the customer has a chance of knowing what they want and how to get it but a competent supplier will provide more than just widgets. They will bring technical service to the customer advising how to meet their needs better than they know how.

Mass inspection will not get me a PS5 any faster.
