Need to find out the heirarchy regarding AS 9100 C and ISO 16949.

I am a QM of a well regraded Aerospace / DOD company that is working with NY santitation. I am being asked if we compy with ISO 16949. We are currently AS 9100 C registered...

Any thoughts. Do they overlap, is AS considered a hither standard??

Re: The Heirarchy regarding AS 9100 C and TS 16949

Neither is higher - they each have different requirements. I believe that ISO/TS 16949 has more requirements, but conformity to TS 16949 doesn't mean conformity to AS9100, and vice versa.

I'm curious why NY Sanitation wants conformity to TS 16949, which is an automotive industry standard.

Thanks,

I understand both comments. I was hoping when ISO 16949 customers flowed down the requirement they would accept AS 9100, revision C as an acceptable alternate. Seems strange that one would have to get certified for several different Q Management Systems.

Is your company supplying products to the automotive industry? If not, then your system can't be certified to ISO/TS 16949. What's the reason for their request?

We are providing for DOD, Aerospace, Space and are now breaking into automotive industry. Trying to figure out if there is a QMS certification that would trump all....

Nope, :nope: they're all separate registrations. Keep in mind that you can design, implement and maintain an integrated QMS.

Smart thing to do...;)

The hierarchy is that they both derive from ISO 9001.

AS 9100 adds detail specific to the aerospace industry, while TS 16949 adds detail specific to the automotive industry.

Each industry has different concerns and that's why the Certifications are separate.

Would you build a car to aerospace standards? Or a plane to automotive standards? My understanding is that planes have to be rather more reliable, and lighter, than cars, so the process requirements in each industry are quite different, as are the consequences of failure. Even if you make seats, or belts, or whatever.
