Hi,
I'm currently in University and have a take home project to complete which asks the following question:

"Explain & describe the link or relation between correlation co-efficient and the T test."

While I know how to use and calculate both I am not sure I actually understand the similarities between both.

I was thinking it was somewhere along the lines of...
The closer to 1 or -1 the stronger the correlation between variables is, in other words how strongly one affects the other, and with the T test it's similar in the sense that you look at the strength of the significance between variables.

Statistics were never really my cup of tea but seeing as I will have more classes like these I would really like your help in actually understanding this matter. Also, as mentioned above, I in no way intend for you to do my homework for me and hence will not copy/paste anything. Just some clarification, or acknowledgement that I'm in the right direction (or completely off track).

Thank you in advance!

Nicole.

Hello Nicole, :bigwave:Welcome to the cove:bigwave:

The correlation coefficient a concept from statistics is a measure of how well trends in the predicted values follow trends in past actual values. It is a measure of how well the predicted values from a forecast model "fit" with the real-life data.

The correlation coefficient is a number between 0 and 1. If there is no relationship between the predicted values and the actual values the correlation coefficient is 0 or very low. As the strength of the relationship between the predicted values and actual values increases so does the correlation coefficient. A perfect fit gives a coefficient of 1.0. Thus the higher the correlation coefficient the better.

2. I am not an expert on the subject, but there are many on the cove and some one will guide you. Saturdays & Sundays are slow, so have patience.

Look at the equations for each:

paired t-Test: t = Sum[(X1 - X2)i] / [sdeviations/(Sqrt(n)]

correlation coefficient: r = Sum[(Xi - Xbar)*(Yi - Ybar)] / [(n-1)*sx*sy]

I used the paired t-Test formula because the similarity is more striking.

Note that the form for each is very similar. With the exception of a few factors, the paired t-test is the sum of the paired deviations divided by the standard deviation of those deviations. The correlation coefficient is the product of the paired residuals divided by the product of the standard deviations.

In my mind, the link between the two statistics is that the t-test tells us if the AVERAGES of two samples are statistically different and the correlation coefficient tells us if the difference is large enough to matter.

Try graphing two sets of samples (one set that is not statistically different and one that is, plo teach individual value) and identify the various parts of the formulas in the graph; look at the statistical results for the t test and the correlation coefficient - this might help you visualize what is happening in the formulas...
