Re: The meaning of "evaluation/measurement technique" & "control method" in Control P

Hello,

Can any one please give futher more detailed explanation on Evaluation / measurement technique & Control method ? or

Any reference link to get the details?
Welcome to the Cove. :bigwave:

Evaluation/Measurement Technique (on the AIAG control plan form) refers to the methods used to inspect/verify a given part feature or characteristic. It generally refers to the device used (e.g., pin gages for verifying hole diameters, or CMM for GD&T requirements) but can also refer to visual inspection. The control method refers to process control, such as control charts or other statistical analysis used to control the conformity of the feature in question. It also can refer to methods/forms used to record periodic operator or inspector verifications.

An example for torque application would be helpful.
The requirements for torque (or any other characteristic) would be given under Product/Process Specification/Tolerance; the Evaluation/Measurement Technique field would tell how the torque is measured and/or what it's measured with; the Sample Size/Frequency fields would be used to tell how many parts to check at each verification and how many to check, and the Control Method would tell how the production process is controlled--as mentioned above, this could be control charting, or it could be creation of records of measurements.

Is Final Inspection a control method?
Possibly, although the general strategy should be to control the process and reduce the amount of inspection that has to be done. One of the examples given in the AIAG manual (see page 57 of the 2nd edition APQP manual, 100% inspection is given as a control method, but it refers to in-process and not final inspection. Sometimes inspection is listed as separate process on the control plan

Also can anyone explain about the guidelines for assinging control method for various product and process characteristics?
There are no universal guidelines. Control methods should be appropriate to the product, customer requirements, and risk involved. Whenever possible, you should control process parameters and settings rather than depending on inspection.

Hello Mr. Jim Wynne,
Thank you very much for your elaborate explanation.

I need a clarification, in the case of an assembly operation, the missing parts are detected using vision camera, next sequence is possible only after ok signal from camera which is controlled thru PLC.

In this case can the evaluation technique can be camera and control method can be PLC linked with declamping on ok signal.

If we store the results in the database against the component serial no. can this also be mentioned as control method.

Thanks for your support.

Kind regards,
R Praveen

The method you describe sounds perfectly reasonable to me, although you might want to change the perspective (if you can) towards prevention and describe the methods used to prevent assemblies with missing parts from reaching the stage where the problem is detected.

Thanks for your support! It's of great help to us.

Regarding your suggestion, we should specify methods for prevention rather than detection in the control methods, is my understanding right? Pl correct .

Thank you once again!

Prevention methods aren't always economically sensible. If what you're doing makes the most sense in terms of risk, it should be OK. My point was that inspection (by any medium) should be considered only after prevention methods have been considered. There could be some combination of the two, depending on risk and circumstances.

Prevention or detection method can be addressed in the control method and the mechanism of prevention or detection is measurement technique .

One more clarification, can we leave control method column blank if there is no control method ?

It's not good to leave blank spaces, and the word "none" tends to attract attention. It's a process control plan, so I'm not sure why you would even want to list something for which there is no control method.

Many thanks for your reply.

It would be better and clear if you provide some examples or sample control plan reference related to assembly process or torque tightening, so that we can compare our understanding.

Thanks very much for your efforts, we have a good understanding now.

Re: The meaning of "evaluation/measurement technique" & "control method" in Control P

Hi all
There are great information in this thread!
But there is a question for me that what is the meaning of “methods for monitoring of control” in the below requirement stated in clause 7.5.1.1 of ISO/TS 16949:
The control plan shall
include methods for monitoring of control exercised over special characteristics (see 7.3.2.3) defined by both

the customer and the organization
Is this the same as “control method” in AIAG form?
Thanks all

This is referring to ensuring statistical control. If there are special characteristics identified by either the customer or the organization or both, statistical monitoring is required. This is indeed the "control method" called for on the control plan form.
