The new ISO9001 2026 - Retraining requirements

Starting to get Involved
Hello,

When should I prepare to take the training of the new ISO9001 that will be released in September 2026? This is my first time witnessing a renewal so I wonder when should I get a training on the updates?
I'm a lead auditor in my organization, and also I manage several internal auditors, and I'm expected to plan the QMS training plan for 2026 and need to assure the budget for it. How should I manage this?
Is it usually announced by training bodies before the release? or only after the release is done?

To a certain extent when you get trained is up to you, but I don’t see a need to rush.

The new version of the standard will be released, but organisations usually have up to 3 years to transition from the previous version to the new one, so if your ISO 9001 recertification audit is due in 2027 or 2028 you don’t need to rush into training right now. If the new version is released in Sept 2026, you’d have up until Sept 2029 to be certified on the new version.

Until you recertify you continue complying with the 2015 version.

I would recommend waiting until the new version is released as training providers will need to create new training for the new version of the standard.

Actually, our recertification cycle for ISO9001 will be on December 2026. Will we have to wait for the new recertification of December 2029?

It looks like the changes will be quite minor. You can probably just read it and internally train your auditors, rather than paying a training provider.

But as a lead auditor, shouldn't I at least update my certificate?

You really can't train to the new standard until it is released. You can, and I believe should, pay attention to what is proposed, but you really can't train to what you don't yet know.

Your personal certificate isn't actually a requirement. It is evidence of your competency, not not a requirement. Many in your position don't hold any certificates at all. If it gives you personal satisfaction to hold a certificate, by all means do so. If yoou do, don't worry about it until you start to get your company ready for the transition.

I would wait. The changes are minor and any training done now will be forgotten in 2 years. The changes are so small that you could get away with a training a few weeks prior to implementation IMO.

There is no requirement to undergo full retraining by attending an auditor course on the new version of the standard. There should be "transition" courses offered.... we have to wait and see what happens. There may be awareness transition courses, auditor transition courses etc etc. In practice, leading quality training organizations work some magic with TC176 so that when the new version of the Standard is released, relevant training courses are offered very soon afterwards.

If you can tell the difference between a requirement for a red piece of paper or a requirement for a white piece of paper you're probably going to be ok and don't need to spend a ton of money taking training from someone who's probably a shake & bake expert..

I cant see what training would be needed for the next revision other than understanding the lyrics of The Who "Heres comes the new boss, same as the old boss."
