Re: New Folks - Please Take a Minute and Introduce Yourself / Say Hello!

1. Name:
Derek

2. Job Title or explanation of what you do:
Presently a full time student at Kettering University —GM Technical Education Program Master of Science for Manufacturing Operations. I’m also a member of the SME, ASQ and an ASQ certified quality engineer since 2005.

3. Industry you're in or have been in:
Mostly automotive. I’ve specialized in engineering solutions for the sustained improvement of quality and productivity. I’ve functioned as an IE, quality engineer, quality technician, and performed some quality system auditing.

4. Company you work for and location:
I’ve worked in southeast Michigan for GM and for suppliers to Ford, GM, Chrysler, et al.

5. Length of time in quality function:
I’ve kept a focus on quality engineering for many years. Academically, I’ve studied in quality science going on ten years now —there’s never enough to learn about quality!

6. Something personal that sets you apart:
What probably sets me apart is a solid background in the science of human behavior. I am very good with people and relate well to our problems which ultimately begin and end with ourselves.

7. Your pet peeve in quality:
So many spend a great deal of time emphasizing a process focus. I feel however, like Dr. Deming, that we must be wholly conscious of the greater system of processes if we are to be truly effective in achieving and sustaining competitive advantage.

8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do?
I feel there is too little education and training that should make up a core feature of every job function. Leaders too often forego education and hurry training, this having the devastating effects of which we are all too familiar. My modus of operation is to ensure that everyone functioning within the system has the opportunity to develop the proper orientation, education, training, and on-the-job experience necessary to achieve and sustain competitive advantage.
