I know someone else said it but the best quality manager I've ever met / worked for had been a production manager as well.
If I could change the world of quality, I would REQUIRE rotation from operations and other functions through the quality organization or function. The best ops folks are the ones who've been through QS, QA, or QC, and the best QA folks have the scar tissue from ops!

bigwave-d2.gif Welcome to the Cove.

I presume by "fall into" you mean your job as a Quality Engineer brings all these duties and "drops them into your lap" to resolve for the company.

Many of us deal with customer complaints on a daily basis. Some are valid, some are not. Many customers complicate matters by the attitude they bring to the process of resolving a complaint. Our task as Quality practitioners is to resolve the complaints as smoothly as possible.

The first step is to assure the customer you acknowledge the complaint and will do everything you can in a logical, orderly manner to resolve the complaint. The key to a smooth resolution is to keep up a constant flow of communication with a customer so the customer NEVER feels you are ignoring the complaint.

With a smooth flow of communication, customers may find it easier to accept if you ultimately determine the customer, not your organization, was in error.
