Re: New Folks - Please Take a Minute and Introduce Yourself/Say Hello!

Hello All,

Quality Engineer here from Greenville, SC. Frequent browser, first time poster. I really needed a place to vent with like-minded professionals on the news I received this morning. If I went around boasting to my family, friends, and co-workers, I would look like a real prick.

I received my CQE results this morning---and passed! This was my first time taking the exam and was a bit surprised that I received certification. I'm the only person in my company to receive cert. on the first try, so I take a bit of pride in that. I'm also 2 weeks shy of my 27th birthday, so I feel like I have a strong start to my young career. All this while juggling a very demanding career, wife, and 2 toddlers.

I know I'm a newbie around here, so I hate to start off with such a boastful post, but I'm on cloud 9 and I knew if anyone could empathize, it would be the Covers! Thanks!

Great! I hope you are an ASQ member and will attend Section meetings and give presentations and write papers to maintain your certification. If not a member, time to consider joining to make the recert easier (sure beats paying for retaking the exam!)

When you have a chance to come down off Cloud Nine, you ought to take the time to tell (write a post) how and what you studied to prepare for the certification exam. Such information is useful to other folks fretting over passing the certification exam. Just as importantly, tell what did NOT work in preparing for the exam. Where there any surprises for you in the test or was it pretty cut and dried?

Thanks all. I am a member of my local section and have been attending meetings for the past year. I recently relocated and joined a new section, so I am anticipating becoming more involved. Like most with certification, I have very little desire to retake the exam, so I intend to use all resources to stay certified.

Concerning preparation, the most helpful thing for me was taking a Statistics course at a local technical college. I have a Bachelor's degree in Journalism and happened to stumble into quality engineering as a profession. Accordingly, my statistics and engineering background needed some catching up. Otherwise, I spent quite a bit of time with the QCI Primer, making notecards, etc. I wanted to know a lot of the material very well so I could answer quickly and spare time for more difficult problems.

I'm not sure of my score and the Pareto analysis on what sections in the BOK need improvement, but I was really lost on the Reliability problems (MTBF, etc.) For whatever reason, the questions were not phrased and set up on the exam as I had studied. Additionally, I did not take a good reference index into the exam (i.e. Juran's Handbook)...I feel this would have helped immensely and given me extra time on some of the more time-intensive problems.

I'm certainly not the star student, but if anyone is prepping, I'd be glad to share anything I can that helped me. Just get in contact.

1. Name: Frank Valderrama
2. Job Title or explanation of what you do: Senior QA/QC Engineer: Central support of operating units (Production Units) in the Oil & Gas Production Division of BHP Billiton. Have been in this position for one year. Prior to this I was a Quality Manager for a small manufacturer (Oil Air Hydraulics) of hydraulic accumulators. Also, worked as an third party ISO 9000 auditor with ABS Quality Evaluations, and Lloyd's Register Quality Assurance. Before this I spend 4 years with Enron Corporation as a Quality Management System specialist. Also, worked as a project engineer with Amoco Oil Company overseeing consultants and contractors for Environmental Remediation projects.
3. Industry you're in or have been in: Oil & Gas, third party ISO 9000 auditing
4. Company you work for and location: BHP Billiton Petroleum, Houston , TX
5. Length of time in quality function 13 years
6. Something personal that sets you apart: Strong knowledge of Quality Management Systems. Spanish is my first language. Hold master degree in Mechanical Engineering and an MBA.
7. Your pet peeve in quality (pet peeve is a minor annoyance that can instill a great level of frustration): Lack of commitmment from senior management on quality management systems.
8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do?
I would create a forum like this one to include the majority of quality professionals in order to exchange information, news, and documents on any industry area.

Your 1 to 6 - Impressive :bigwave:
Your No. 7 is a commonly shared problem/peeve.
Re your No. 8 however, why re-invent the wheel? The Cove is already here :D
If you or someone else could get senior management to enter and read the Cove then it would be a good start to your No.7. Only having quality professionals getting together is rather like having a church filled with ministers listening to, and preaching at, each other. Maybe that's how the hundreds of different religions world-wide originally started :notme:
