Introduction

:biglaugh:
Hello All,
my introduction - name - Frank A.
I am a Quality Engineer for Dura Automotive in Fremont, Michigan and I believe automotive supplier is the best response.
I have been in the Quality arena now for about 12 years, I was a process engineer and product engineer prior to that.
My pet peeve in quality is suppliers blaming the operators for poor system problems - example - answer to an 8D - "Operator was fired for making bad product." OH????
If I could change the world of quality I would try and get the automotive industry to make up their mind - ISO - QS - TS - what's next? With cost downs and reductions on piece price, where do we fund all the changes they keep asking us to succumb to?
My personal that makes me stand out is that I am a martial arts instructor and college professor on the side. I have also developed a web site for quality - please feel free to check it out.

thanks and great to be part of the forum.

Frank A.

1. Lori Vollmer
2. I am currently a graduate student at Fordham University in the
Deming Scholars MBA Program
3. Very diverse background - before I came to school I worked at a real-estate securities firm. My first internship was working with an enterprise quality team that was deploying a QMS based on ISO 9001-2000.
4. New York City
5. Just beginning... :)
6. I recognized that I didn't want to be putting out fires for the rest of my life. I quit my job to pursue my MBA - but not a traditional MBA - I wanted a deeper learning experience... I am in my second semester now.
7. In my very short experience I have noticed a lack of management commitment and a focus on the bottom line at the expense of the organization. It seems like quality is thought of simply as a department or an after-thought - not a concept that is built into everything the organization does.
8. Get the people at the top to change the way they think about quality.

Thank you folks!!

Thanks for the update, as mentioned, I have never used or seen diamond shaped pins before. I was told that the concept was to ensure there was no elongation in a hole, but it just didn't seem feasible. Now that I have read your answers, it sounds correct and I have confidence in the information given me. I appreciate everyone's help and input. thanks again.

Frank

7. Butt kissers :ca: & Horn blowers  . Managers that got there without hard work, education or experience. Managers that push their work down to their employees due to their lack of knowledge and call it delegating while they search ebay. :topic: It is a shame how many owners appreciate butt kissing.
8. Nothing. Quality is excellent since there is a new fad every year as long as we can keep up we will always be employed:0)

So why do I stay? Because in three years I have turned the quality system around. Saving my company millions not to mention lost reputation.

Welcome to the Cove, folks!:bigwave:

We hope you find answers and "stuff" that helps you in your careers. We further hope you will soon be supplying answers and "stuff" for the next crop of newcomers to the Cove.

Most of all, we hope you find a community that understands the travails you may be experiencing at any particular moment in this field we call "Quality."

2. Job Title or explanation of what you do
Director of Consulting Services - A rather grandiose title, my role within the organization encompasses the identification and design of UI and functionality changes for our Web-based management system software application, conduct QA testing for application bug fixes, features and enhancements prior to release, write and update our online help files prior to each software release, develop and conduct application training classes for our customers, serve as a management system implementation consultant for our customers.
3. Industry you're in or have been in
Mostly software development, I spent a few years working for a software duplication and packaging company
4. Company you work for and location
Vintara, Oakland CA
5. Length of time in quality function
I started in quality assurance back in 1984.
6. Something personal that sets you apart
Avid reader, largely self-educated (too busy earning a living since 15 to take time out for college)
7. Your pet peeve in quality
The delusion that the ability to use buzzwords and terminology with facility equates to knowledge and understanding of the basic principles of quality
8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do?
Place greater emphasis on personal responsibility and accountability for the quality of the work we do.

2. Quality Inspector for DoD.
3. Aircraft parts. Prior to that I worked as a Production Controller in ANG for
14 years.
4. DCMA-HArtford in Connecticut.
5. I'm relatively new to the quality field. Although I like to think I've been
doing it most of my working life.
6. Known as "Virilityman" by many due to the ability to have "kids on
demand". They say I just have to be in the area for someone to get
pregnant. Supposedly I have two sets of twins to my credit. I have 6 of
my own(that's 6 kids, not 6 sets of twins).
7. Years ago we went through a phase called TQM at the base. Suddenly
there were handbooks telling you how to speak quality and formulate a
PAT (Process Action Team). People were so caught up in talking this
strange new language they lost their common sense. I posted a sign on
the door to our office which said "Quality done, not quality spoken!"
Needless to say I was lectured to about my lack of team mentality with
respect to the quality movement. It's that ability to get so caught up in
the abstact theory of quality that one can no longer apply it in a practical
sense to production that bothers me most.
8. Make the whole quality process more tangible to the masses. They really
need to understand it before they can do it.
