The relationship between the FMEA and Control Plan

Hello all,

I have some problems encountered and need your advice::confused:
1. The special characteristic that appeared in control plan which shall be sourced from customer input / defined as special charateristic in FMEA first, isn't it? Any other sources?

2. Are there any problems if we defined the special characteristic in control plan and work instructions only?

3. Per our current practice, I will define which process parameter / product specification should be classified as special characteristic, then base on the severity and occurance then further classified them as "Critical" or "Significant", any problem for our currance practice? Or just simply classified them as specical characteristic first, then base on the Severity and Occrance to further classified them as " Critical" or "Significant"?

Thank you in advanced for your inputs.

1) Special characteristics can/should also be set by you based on what is important to control in your own manufacturing process.

2) That meets the minimum requirement, but it would be nice to see them in the Flow and FMEA for consistency.

3) Defining extra levels of special are up to you.

If the decision of designation is yours and not specified on your customer drawings, I'd suggest you think hard about designating something a "critical characteristic". This could become a "legal" issue down the road. In the automotive industry these are considered "safety Items" and comand more documentation and verification. You could use terms such as "special", "major", "minor", and even "incidental" if you want to classify them more closely to their function affecting the product.
