Could be used to illustrate the dangers of making decisions based on personal belief and supposition and in the absence of any real facts and data.
In the nutshell the Management allowed itself to be fooled by excellant reports (good writing skills used to manuplate facts), and mis-interpreted statistics/data. Statistics is a great tool in the hands of a right person. The same statistic in the hands of a moron or unscruplous person can play havoc, as is demonstrated here. There is an old line: "According to statisticians, if your head is in an oven and legs in a freezer, then your body is at normal temprature". (though it is a dead body)
