COREL INKS INTERNET APPLIANCE DEAL FOR LINUX

TRYING BOLSTER ITS sagging fortunes, Corel on Tuesday announced a partnership agreement with Linux Technology to deliver a version of its Corel WordPerfect 8 for Linux Suite in Internet appliances.

Linux Technology makes the Solution Box and the Office/Residential Gateway, two Internet appliance products. The Solutions Box, or S Box, can be operated as a stand-alone system while the Office/Residential Gateway requires networking support. Both are compatible with multiple platforms.

VA LINUX EXTENDS IA-64 PROTOTYPES TO OPEN-SOURCE DEVELOPERS

VA LINUX ON Friday announced that it is now offering Intel Itanium processor prototype systems to open-source developers over the Web through its SourceForge development center. Although VA Linux and Intel officials were unavailable to comment, Ron Curry, director of marketing for the IA-64 division at Intel, said in the statement that SourceForge is an ideal forum for developers to advance Linux software for IA-64 platforms. "SourceForge offers members of the Linux community an unprecedented chance to develop open source software for a pre-released processor architecture," said John Hall, vice president of VA Linux, in the statement. COREL GAINS EXTRA FINANCING, LOSES KEY STAFF

TROUBLED CANADIAN APPLICATIONS vendor and Linux distributor Corel received both good and bad news late Thursday. The company announced some much-needed extra financing, but also the resignations of two senior executives.

Trading in Corel shares was halted at the company's request earlier Thursday, signaling the likelihood of news related to the software vendor's shaky finances.

IBM UNVEILS 64-WAY NUMA SERVER; PROMISES LINUX SUPPORT

ATTACKING THE INTEL-BASED server market from both above and below, IBM on Wednesday unwrapped two servers -- a 64-way NUMA-Q server and an entry-level Netfinity system -- aimed at smaller companies looking to host budding e-businesses.

Fueled by Intel's new 700MHz Pentium III Xeon chip, the NUMA-Q E410 is intended to take on systems such as Hewlett-Packard's V-Series for data-intensive applications such as data warehousing and business intelligence.
