Thread plug chip groove - Thread plugs without the chip groove

I often purchase thread go-no/go plugs and ring gages at my job. On all the plug gages they come with a chip groove milled in. We have these purchased parts that have a coating that the chip groove digs into. Do any of you guys order the thread plugs without the chip groove? Is it really needed? Thanks for any advice.
